Dermatologists reveal the three most effective ingredients to include in your skincare routine to combat the signs of aging.
She said beauty products need to be used consistently to get optimal results.
Nancy Wickford is a skincare expert and dermatologist for UK-based brand HelloSKIN.
In an interview with The Sun, she shared some must-try tips to maintain a youthful appearance.
Beauty Basics
Wickford said a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen and occasional exfoliation can help with skin health at any age.
The hydrogel eye mask targets the delicate area around the eyes, which is prone to dryness, fine lines and wrinkles, she said.

She recommended HelloSKIN’s Hydrating Hydrogel Eye Mask to reduce dark circles, puffiness, and crow’s feet.
The $16 mask contains hyaluronic acid and the Korean compound Botanical Plus 10.
“In your 20s and 30s, hydrogel eye masks can be used as a preventative measure to keep the eye area soft and moist,” Wickford said.
“From your 40s onwards, when signs of ageing become more evident, these masks help to reduce the appearance of existing fine lines and wrinkles while providing intense hydration and nourishment to the delicate eye area.”

Skin care staple
Wickford said treating fine lines and wrinkles requires patience, as it can take weeks or even months to see results.
She shares three ingredients that can transform aging skin, but warns against combining retinoids with harsh scrubs.
“Retinoids: These vitamin A derivatives increase cell turnover and stimulate collagen production,” she said.
“Start with a low-concentration retinol serum or cream and gradually increase the concentration as your skin tolerates it.
“Use it at night and follow with a moisturizer.
“Moisturizing face serum: Look for a serum that contains hyaluronic acid, like helloSKIN’s Hydration Serum, which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It plumps and hydrates skin, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”
“Antioxidant Serum: Vitamins C and E help neutralize free radicals that cause premature aging.
“Use a strong antioxidant serum under your sunscreen in the morning.”
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Healthline explains that hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan that occurs naturally in connective tissues in the body.
It keeps moisture molecules on the surface of the skin, keeping the skin hydrated.
Hyaluronic acid reduces wrinkles and promotes wound healing.
Perfect Face
Wickford said professional salon treatments such as facials should be done in addition to, not instead of, an at-home skin care routine.
“A professional facial helps fight the signs of aging by deeply exfoliating, moisturizing and infusing the skin with powerful anti-aging ingredients,” she said.
“If you’re concerned about wrinkles, age spots, or loss of firmness, a facial every four to six weeks can help maintain a youthful, radiant complexion.”
Youthful Radiance
Dermatologists say several lifestyle factors may reverse the signs of aging.
These include regular exercise for improved flexibility, cardiovascular health and muscle tone.
It is also important to quit smoking, protect your skin from the sun, and maintain a healthy weight.
“A balanced, nutritious diet high in antioxidants found in fruits, vegetables and healthy fats can combat oxidative stress and inflammation associated with aging,” she said.
“Getting enough sleep, managing stress through practices like meditation and yoga, and staying socially engaged can also have a positive impact on physical and cognitive function.”

Terrifying hack
Wickford said three popular anti-ageing tips on social media should be avoided as they have no scientific basis and could be harmful.
“Vitamin C is effective for anti-aging, but if you use undiluted lemon juice, it can cause severe irritation, dryness and even chemical burns to the skin due to its low pH level,” she said.
“Some people claim that the hydrocortisone in hemorrhoid creams can reduce swelling and wrinkles around the eyes.
“However, we recommend avoiding using it under the eyes as these creams are not made for the delicate area around the eyes and can cause severe irritation, thinning of the skin, and other side effects.”
She also advises against self-dermaplaning to remove dead skin cells and hairs.
“Attempting to do this at home with improper tools and techniques can result in cuts, scarring and infections, so always leave it to a professional,” she said.
