HYDERABAD: The Christian community of the twin cities came together to celebrate Easter Sunday at various churches and chapels, taking part in special services filled with family gatherings, delicious food, prayers, hymns and sermons.
Churches across the city were decorated with colorful decorations, bright lights and fragrant flowers to welcome worshipers to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
“Easter commemorates the third day of Christ’s crucifixion and symbolizes his resurrection and the promise of new life. Easter is the foundation of our faith. If Jesus did not rise from the grave, we would He would not have accepted Christianity,” Father Wilfred said at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Secunderabad. There, a skit about the Resurrection of Christ was performed prior to Holy Mass on Easter Sunday. .
For many others, the festival began on Saturday night with prayer and a sermon, fostering a sense of spiritual unity among believers.
“More than 1,500 people gathered around 11pm on Saturday night to light candles and share Easter greetings while enjoying sacred songs and hymns,” said Peter Santosh of Wesley Church Ramkot.・Diveker said.
Many churches held Sunday services in different languages, including Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and English, promoting inclusivity within the community. Community members shared that the festival is also marked by the tradition of colorful Easter eggs.
“We are obsessed with coloring these eggs in vibrant colors.
The egg itself became a symbol of resurrection. The egg symbolizes new life emerging from the eggshell, just as Jesus rose from the grave. After coloring, they are placed as garnishes or eaten as part of a feast,” said Princy Phillips, a medical student from James Street, Secunderabad.
An important aspect of this celebration is the culmination of the 40-day Lent, during which Christians abstain from certain luxuries as a form of spiritual discipline, culminating on Easter Sunday.
“Easter is also a day for families to come together. From Saturday morning, families are busy preparing the traditional Easter feast. From succulent roast lamb and flavorful biryani to hot cross buns and Easter eggs, Each family adds their own touch to the sumptuous cuisine, right down to the mouth-watering desserts,” said Sharon Dasari, 24, from Kukatpalli.
