(CNN) — Travis Barker is celebrating how far he’s come since being seriously injured in a plane crash in 2008.
On Tuesday, the Blink-182 drummer, inspired by his recovery from the accident, launched a new wellness initiative called “Run Travis Run,” holding events in New York and Los Angeles ahead of the band’s two upcoming concerts in both cities.
“In an accident in 2008, I suffered burns over 70 percent of my body and doctors told me I may never walk or play the drums again, so I was determined to prove everyone wrong, including myself,” Barker said in a statement.
He went on to say that his recovery started with short walks, which turned into short daily runs, and last year he ran his first half marathon and also took part in several 5K runs.
“The running community is huge and I love how people from all walks of life run together and support each other,” his statement read. “This is the foundation of Run Travis Run, and we’re just getting started.”
In 2008, Barker and Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein were seriously injured when their charter plane crashed upon takeoff in South Carolina. Four passengers on board, including Barker’s security guard, his assistant and the two pilots, were killed in the crash.
Thirteen years later, Barker and his wife, Kourtney Kardashian, flew on a plane for the first time since the accident.
Barker launched the “Run Travis Run” campaign, paying tribute to the hit film “Forrest Gump,” on his Instagram page on Tuesday with a video recreating the “Run Forrest Run!” scene from the 1994 Tom Hanks classic.
The video, directed by Barker’s frequent collaborator Brandon Dermer, also features Kardashian as his girlfriend, Jenny Curran (played by Robin Wright in the original film).
Wellness experiences on both coasts will include morning runs with Barker and offer “a 360-degree exploration of health, wellness and mindfulness,” according to a news release. The initiative will also include fitness classes, mindfulness workshops and “experiential activations” with top brands.
