Raymond, Alberta, June 3, 2024 /CNW/ – A landmark 12-week, fully blinded, randomized controlled trial NUTRIMUM RESEARCHrecently published British Journal of Psychiatry (BJPsych Open) is a company of Hardy Nutritionals. Daily essential nutrients (DEN) is used to treat symptoms of prenatal depression. Follow-up survey The health of babies born to mothers who took DEN was compared to babies born to healthy mothers who regularly took prenatal vitamins and pharmaceutical antidepressants. The study provides compelling evidence that this broad-spectrum micronutrient blend offers greater benefits to pregnant women and their babies than antidepressants or regular prenatal supplements.
Key findings for mothers:
Improved mental health
Daily Essential Nutrients (DEN) significantly improved self- and clinician-rated depression, global functioning, and sleep quality in pregnant women compared with a placebo control group, and nearly twice as many women who took the micronutrients reported a “great deal” or “very great deal” improvement. Women with personality problems (such as those who have difficulty making and keeping friends, are impulsive, untrusting, short-tempered, anxious, or perfectionist) benefited most from the micronutrients.
Safety, Tolerability, and Efficacy
The researchers concluded that the micronutrients were safe and that “outcomes were comparable to those obtained with psychotherapy but were achieved with much less contact.” Furthermore, the improvement in overall function indicates that “the effects of micronutrients may not be specific to one aspect of a medical condition (e.g., depression) but may function better as a global metabolic regulator.” “These findings are consistent with a growing body of literature highlighting the potential benefits of a rich nutritional environment in improving brain health.”

Key findings for babies:
Improving neonatal outcomes
Babies born to mothers who took DEN to treat depression during pregnancy fared significantly better on six of seven physiological and neurological outcomes (habituation to disturbances, orientation to sights and sounds, motor control, state regulation, autonomic stability, and normal reflexes) than babies born to mothers who took pharmaceutical antidepressants.
The “DEN babies” performed better than babies born to healthy, non-medicated mothers in three of the seven assessments: habituation to disturbances, motor control and autonomic stability.
Optimal Pregnancy and Delivery
Infants exposed to micronutrients were more likely to carry their pregnancies to term than infants born to healthy, unmedicated mothers or mothers taking antidepressants, which bodes well for children’s lifelong outcomes.

A Holistic Approach to Mental Health During Pregnancy
The researchers determined that the micronutrients improved maternal psychological functioning and infant birth outcomes, and mitigated some of the known risks to infants resulting from maternal prenatal depression.
The holistic nature of Daily Essential Nutrients, containing a wide range of vitamins and minerals, supports overall mental health and well-being. This holistic approach addresses nutritional deficiencies that often contribute to symptoms of depression, providing a more natural, balanced treatment option.
The researchers hypothesized that the benefits of Daily Essential Nutrients compared with popular over-the-counter pre-conception supplements may be due to its “higher dosage.” [and a] More balanced nutritional diversity.”
“Overall, our findings suggest that supplementing with micronutrients above recommended dietary intakes during pregnancy may be safer than existing treatments for women with depression and may also provide these infants with a better start in life.”
