“I’ve seen a few Reiki practitioners myself, and some I found really great, and some I didn’t,” she says, noting that the same goes for psychotherapists: “I would encourage anyone who’s interested not to entrust their entire treatment to one practitioner.”
Is distance reiki legal?
While it’s beneficial to attend these sessions in person to experience the practice in a comfortable environment, distance Reiki has become especially popular as the pandemic continues and the world becomes more virtual. “The idea behind distance Reiki is that energy is not limited by time or space, so it can be sent anywhere,” says Poon. “Unlike massage, you can easily work with someone’s energy centers from a distance.” So a person doesn’t need to be in the same room as another person, or even synchronized in time, to give or receive energy.
That being said, for energy healing to work, there are a few things that need to be done. First and foremost, the person sending the energy needs to set an intention. “One of the things I tell my students is that energy healing is 90 percent intention and 10 percent effort,” explains Reiki Master Son Attjaroen. “So as long as you’re expressing your intention, the Reiki will be sent naturally.” This is especially important for the person sending the energy, but also for the person receiving it. “The more intentional you are, the more likely it is that you’ll be able to send Reiki naturally.” [and say] “It has more impact if you say, ‘Yes, I’m going to receive this.'” That’s why a random TikTok video that pops up on your “For You” page might not be as effective. The person sending you Reiki might have a clear intention, like getting a good night’s sleep or letting go of negativity, but you probably didn’t open the app with that same single intention. That’s where a one-on-one distance Reiki session with a practitioner comes in: it’s more tailored to your needs.
Another key to successful Reiki, especially distance Reiki, is permission. Mystique Awakening, a Reiki Master and one of the most popular Reiki content creators on TikTok with 1.3 million followers, discussed this in a pinned video in July 2021. She began by explaining the importance of free will in Reiki. If a person is not willing to receive the energy she sends, they cannot receive it. “Healing only happens in the amount you can receive,” she says. She then goes on to explain the importance of consent. Those who are not willing to accept her Reiki cannot receive it, but she understands that for some of her followers, clear permission is important. To respect this, she is asking these people to write their consent in the comments section of her upcoming videos.
Can I learn Reiki on my own?
Reiki Masters aren’t the only ones pulling and pulling on TikTok. While there are Certified Reiki Masters (the highest status you can get in the practice of Reiki), there are also amateur creators who use these keywords and actions to gain followers and likes. To become a Reiki Master, you must take a course and become certified. “To become a Reiki Master, you must complete three consecutive levels of training,” explains Reiki Master Beth Eiglersh. “The courses teach you the history, concepts, symbols, and application.” Only after completing level 3 can you call yourself a Reiki Master. While you’re completing levels 1 and 2, you’re called a Reiki Practitioner.
