The Norfolk branch of Links has come up with the idea to host a free Wellness Expo in Norfolk on Saturday.
NORFOLK, Va. — Kidney disease often afflicts people in the African American community at nearly three times the rate of other Americans, according to Norfolk (Va.) Link Chapter President Pamela Walker. .
That’s why the Norfolk branch of the Lynx came up with the idea to host a free Wellness Expo in Norfolk on Saturday at the Murray Center on Brambleton Avenue.
“We are hosting a wellness expo focused on kidney disease awareness in the African American community,” said one of the sponsors.
A $10,000 grant was recently awarded to the Norfolk chapter to raise awareness of the “detection, prevention, treatment and management” of chronic kidney disease in the African American community, a spokesperson said.
The Lynx Norfolk branch has been selected by the national branch to receive a $10,000 grant for the Black KARE initiative, which aims to bring awareness to those disproportionately affected by chronic kidney disease.
The expo included workshops, cooking demonstrations, and an informational expo to educate attendees about kidney disease. Participants were also provided with a free cookbook to help them prepare healthy meals.
Dr. Kiranjit K. Dhillon, an instructor at Eastern Virginia Medical School and a board-certified nephrologist, was the featured speaker.
