Local naturopath Amy Tyler shows us how to get rid of bloat and improve gut health while enjoying a summer barbecue.
AUSTIN, Texas — More people will be grilling outdoors this summer. But what’s less talked about is the importance of gut health and enjoying delicious food without stomach discomfort.
Naturopathic physician Dr. Amy Tyler has been providing natural health solutions to the Austin community since 2007. She currently serves as Vice President of the Texas Association of Naturopathic Physicians (TXAND).
She recommends thinking about pairing Texas barbecue main dishes with dishes that support gut health and digestion.
“Digestion actually starts in our brain. We don’t think about it much, but when we think about food or see or smell food, we actually start producing saliva. That’s why your mouth drools. We start making acids and enzymes that “digest and break down food. So when you’re eating in a quiet environment, you actually concentrate on the food.” When you eat and chew your food well, your digestion improves,” Tyler said.
Tyler said it’s important to take advantage of slowing down while eating, as chewing is important. Chewing your food more quickly signals satiety and tends to prevent you from overeating.
According to Tyler, the solution for digestive health includes Ortho-Digestzyme, a comprehensive blend of enzymes used to support healthy digestion and maximize nutrient absorption.
“This is really great if you think of enzymes like little scissors that cut your food into smaller absorbable units. So when you take this in, when you’re eating something at a barbecue, etc. ‘It really helps prevent bloating and fullness.’The food is really sumptuous,’ Tyler said.
Orthobiotics also help maintain a healthy environment for vitamin intake and optimal immune function, she said.

“Unlike many other probiotics, it doesn’t need to be refrigerated. It’s very potent. It’s basically good bacteria that is very important for our colon to be healthy. Antibiotics Long-term use, alcohol, additives, foods, etc. all have negative effects.”The number of good bacteria decreases, so this is a good way to replenish them,” Tyler said.
Finally, as Tyler explains, GI Revive by Designs of Health is like aloe for the gastrointestinal tract.
“So we thought about using aloe to soothe your skin when you have a sunburn or a scrape. Aloe is a powder, and when you mix it with water and drink it, it coats the underlying layer,” Tyler said. .
All of these products are available at Peoples Rx Pharmacy, a family-owned Austin staple for over 40 years.
