Alternative therapies are those treatments that are different from the usual treatments given by doctors. In other words, any treatment that is not currently considered an integral part of conventional medical practice is classified as alternative therapies or alternative medicine. The benefits and healing powers of these therapies are often established by research, but may not be scientifically proven. Alternative therapies can achieve healing, treatment and cure through diet, the human body’s self-healing mechanisms, various energies, herbs and other supplements, etc. Some of these therapies are thousands of years older than conventional medicine. Over the past few decades, there has been a resurgence of interest in holistic and natural healing, and various alternative therapies have gained acceptance and popularity not only in India but across the world. Some of the most popular alternative therapies are:

acupuncture – A well-known alternative therapy is acupuncture. This therapy originates from ancient China and has been practiced for thousands of years. Acupuncturists believe that illness and ailments are caused by imbalances in cosmic energy. Our bodies have invisible channels through which Yin and Yang energy flow. These two opposing forces are constantly merging, but can also become imbalanced. The body’s energy network contains specific acupressure points that are linked to various organs and bodily functions. Acupuncture involves inserting needles into the subcutaneous connective tissue at these very specific acupressure points to balance, slow down or stimulate specific energies, bringing about healing.

Shiatsu – Acupressure, like acupuncture, works on the principle of various specific points that are energy centres in the human body. Stimulating these points corrects imbalances in the flow of vital energy and promotes healing. Acupressure uses the hands, elbows or specific instruments to apply the right amount of pressure to these key points on the body to release blockages and promote healing.

Ayurveda – Ayurveda is an ancient healing system that originated in India. The word Ayurveda is made up of two words, Ayur, meaning life, and Veda, meaning knowledge. Ayurveda is a natural healing system that balances the body by balancing the three basic life forces in the body known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Ayurveda teaches living in harmony with nature and harnessing the body’s ability to heal itself. Apart from herbal remedies, Ayurveda also uses techniques such as meditation, breathing exercises, and yoga.

Aromatherapy – Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy that uses the scents of essential oils to enhance health, vitality, and emotional well-being. Aromatherapy is mentioned in both ancient Indian and Chinese healing practices, but modern-day aromatherapy is credited to French pharmacist Rene Maurice Gattefossé. In aromatherapy, essential oils can be used externally as salves, infusions, and lotions, or they can be used internally, where they can be mixed into food and ingested.

Reiki – Reiki is an energy therapy that originated in Tibet and Japan. The word Reiki means universal life energy. Reiki was rediscovered in Japan in the 19th century by Dr. Mikao Usui in Kyoto and named it Reiki. Reiki is very simple, it works by placing hands on different parts of the body, energy centers, giving life energy to all organs. During a Reiki session, the practitioner does not use his own energy, but acts as a channel, using his hands to direct the universal energy to the recipient. Reiki brings harmony and physical, emotional, mental and spiritual balance to the body, resulting in healing.

Homeopathy – Homeopathy originated in Germany in the 18th century. It is one of the most popular and widely accepted types of alternative medicine. Homeopathy is based on the philosophy that both cure and disease result from the same situation. Substances that cause disease in large doses have medicinal properties when used in very small doses. Therefore, symptoms that resemble the symptoms of the disease are created in order to cure the illness. Herbs and natural medicines are also used in homeopathy.

Natural remedies – Naturopathy, as the name suggests, is an alternative therapy that uses only natural methods to aid the human body in healing itself. Therapeutic modalities such as herbal medicine, color therapy, ozone therapy, reflexology, massage therapy, etc., fall under the category of naturopathy.
