In the high-stakes world of professional sports, it’s easy to focus solely on the physical aspects of the game, but as any athlete will tell you, the mental play is just as important, if not more important, to success on and off the field.
That’s why the Las Vegas Raiders and Raiders Foundation are proud to advocate for vital mental health efforts and resources in the region throughout the year, but especially during Mental Health Awareness Month in May. The Las Vegas community has always faced unique challenges throughout its history. While we have persevered, we understand the lasting impacts of trauma. We also recognize that there is a great need for mental health resources in our region.
Nevada recently acknowledged it needs 424 additional mental health workers and 1,714 substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors. Nevada also has one of the lowest psychologist-to-resident ratios in the country. A 2023 report by Mental Health America ranked Nevada last in youth access to mental health care and 39th overall in mental health care.
These data highlight the urgent need to increase mental health resources across the Silver State, and our organization is committed to contributing to that effort.
“Inspired by the Raiders’ tradition of doing good for the surrounding community, we are actively participating in efforts aimed at reducing the stigma associated with mental health treatment. We use our platform and resources to provide funding to organizations like Lou Ruvo Brain Health Center and Opportunity Village, raise awareness through social media campaigns, and engage the public through events.”
The Las Vegas Raiders and Raiders Foundation prioritize the mental wellness of our players, alumni and employees by providing access to comprehensive mental health resources, including confidential in-person counseling services, stress management workshops and targeted support programs through our Employee Resource Groups. Our goal is to ensure every member of our organization has access to the support they need to succeed during and beyond their careers.
Across Nevada, countless partner organizations and professionals are committed to providing critical mental health services, including the Resilience & Justice Center, managed by Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and staffed by knowledgeable, compassionate professionals, who help people access free, confidential resources to build strength and resilience after tragedy. Their dedication and compassion are inspiring, and we are honored to support their efforts through our fundraising and advocacy efforts.
By working together both in the field and in the community, we can eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and ensure everyone has access to the care and support they deserve. We strive to set an example for all Nevadans by openly discussing mental health and investing in resources and support services. In everything we do, our shared goal is to create a culture where everyone feels able to prioritize their emotional and mental health.
Everyone in our state should have access to the resources they need to do so, and the Las Vegas Raiders are committed to using our platform and resources to advance the overall health and well-being of our community. Together, we will tackle mental health issues head-on to ensure everyone in our community can live a fulfilling life.
