If you’re looking for a collagen supplement, why not follow Jennifer Aniston’s example?
The former Friends star is thankfully not one to hide her skincare secrets, and one of her favourite beauty products is one of the most popular supplements available right now.
Jennifer’s Vital Proteins Collagen Powder has received over 150,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. Amazon UK and Amazon US.
As a HELLO! Shopping editor who’s always on the lookout for all things celeb-favorite, beauty collagen was already on my radar, but it was when I spotted it on my sister’s kitchen counter that sealed the deal for me.
To be honest, I don’t know if she’s a Jennifer Aniston fan, but I do know that she’s very health-conscious. She told me that she uses the Friends star’s favorite products to improve her skin and hair, and that it’s also a key ingredient in her protein ball recipe.
So, being a typical sister, I followed her lead and bought myself some sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free powder.
Beauty supplements are obviously trending – here are some recommendations from Shopping Editor Sophie Bates Just add water to the Shred (“I find that having a super green drink when I’m feeling sleepy in the afternoon really improves my mood,” she says.) Meanwhile, Meghan Markle and Oprah are famously fond of health-boosting drinks. Clever Blend Super latte.
If you’re particularly concerned about your skin, nails, hair, and joints, collagen powder is a great option. But what is collagen? It’s the skin-firming protein that strengthens all of these things, promoting elasticity and hydration. And when you can get an easy anti-aging boost every day with just one scoop of powder… what’s not to love?
Now, when I opened my container of Vital Proteins, it was a very fine powder, in an industrial looking plastic container with a scoop included, but one of the things I was most concerned about was the taste. As someone with a very sensitive sense of smell and taste, there was very little smell, which gave me hope.
But I should have read the instructions. The first time I tried collagen powder, it was a disaster. I immediately dumped a spoonful into cold water. Anyone with basic chemistry knowledge should know that’s a mistake. The collagen powder curdled into a sticky, gooey substance.
I was a little reluctant, but I consulted my knowledgeable friend Google and after a quick search I discovered that the correct way to add this to a cold drink is to stir a spoonful into a very small amount of room temperature water, let it dissolve and then add it.
After this simple hack, I was impressed! When in just water, it gives recipes and drinks a very faint, barely noticeable gelatinous taste, but it has absolutely no flavor and doesn’t change the consistency.
Don’t expect a creamer-like effect, as it doesn’t add any creaminess whatsoever (though there is another Vital Proteins powder for that). Also, one other note: this powder is not vegan, so avoid it if that’s an issue for you.
I’ve tried it in smoothies, cooking recipes, and most hassle-free, like Jen does, by adding it to her hot coffee every morning.
Wanting to make sure I’d missed something, I checked out some of the Amazon reviews, thinking maybe my more sensitive senses were less keen this time around. Overall, shoppers agreed, with comments like, “This product is great! It doesn’t change the taste of your drink, but you can feel the effects,” and “It works just as described!! It’s tasteless, so you can just add it to your morning coffee! Easy!!”
When it comes to beauty benefits, the powder has also received rave reviews: “I used the whole container and my hair is growing faster and looking better. My skin is clearer and looks better. My nails are growing faster and thicker,” said one shopper.
I’m not particularly surprised that Jennifer Aniston endorsed it – in fact, she swears by it for “years” before becoming the Chief Creative Officer of Vital Proteins.
“Collagen is like the glue that holds everything together. I’ve always been an advocate of nourishing your health from the inside out, which is why I started working with Vital Proteins years ago,” she said when she took on the role. “Now having the opportunity to be a part of the brand in a bigger way as chief creative officer is incredibly exciting for me.”
I’m so happy to have found such a great way to get collagen every day. In fact, I’m going to try their collagen coffee creamer, which comes in flavors like vanilla and coconut, that are specially designed for hot drinks. I’ll let you know what I think when I try it.
