“We found a great school here, so we said, ‘If I can get into this school, I’ll move,’ and then my kids got in, so we moved!” Naomi recalled of moving to Nashville in 2021. “We didn’t know anyone who was going to be here, so it was important to us to create a community here. The school is a great resource to connect with people, and we’ve met some amazing families here. The people are so kind. We love it here and our kids are so happy here, and that’s the most important thing.”

Naomi has always been involved in the fitness world, so she felt it was time to open up her own place. “Jason and I have always loved working out, and we always wanted to open up our own place,” says Naomi, who was a makeup artist in Hollywood before becoming an indoor spin instructor and personal trainer. “But the great thing about a Studio Pilates franchise is that it’s a turnkey solution; they provide so much support on the back end, especially when you’re moving out of state. With Jason gone for work, I was like, ‘I need the support of a franchise,’ and I know we couldn’t do it alone.”
“The fitness community we built in LA was amazing and it was so rewarding for us, so we wanted to replicate that here,” she continues.

The idea became a reality when she realized her daughter, a high school senior this year, would soon be leaving home. “Right now I’m running this business and it keeps me busy,” she says. “My son is going to be a freshman, so that’s a big push for me, but I’ve always wanted to open a studio, and I thought about it when I moved here three years ago. My daughter can drive him to school, and I can help out when Jason is away, so she’s old enough to drive him to school. Once she goes to college, I’ll be busy with this business. We started this business to make life easier for us after we’re done raising our kids.”
Naomi and Jason have worked together before, so this time it felt natural: “So far there haven’t been any problems. Our interests match, our hobbies match, everything’s going well,” says Jason, who is originally from Canada.

The two entrepreneurs say they have “learned a lot” over the past few months.
“I was amazed at the amount of materials, guidance and support the franchise provided to us – so much training and stuff I never would have thought of,” says Jason. “You don’t know what you don’t know! But I was super impressed with Naomi’s tenacity in going through it all and completing all the training and everything that was required for the license. So far, it’s been amazing.”

Naomi says Studio Pilates is “very effective” because it is designed by a physiotherapist.
“It’s safe and scientifically proven to get results,” she adds. “I’m a Pilates instructor and have been teaching Pilates for years. It’s magical and amazing. Studio Pilates targets and strengthens muscles to make you better. It can create real change. Another unique thing about Studio Pilates is that we use SPTV, which shows the class on a TV screen so participants know what you’re doing. The feedback on the TV screen is great and then the teacher comes and actually moves and corrects you if needed. You get one-on-one training, which I think is completely unique. Also, all classes are open to anyone at any level of Pilates. Classes are for beginners, intermediate and advanced. You can make the exercises harder or easier for you depending on the springs on the reformer. It’s a very inclusive environment.”

After Jason broke his spine in a racing accident in 2022, his doctor recommended he incorporate Pilates into his exercise routine to strengthen his core and support his spine for the rest of his life. “I was 33 at the time, so I started doing Pilates then and I’ve loved it ever since,” he says. “For me, when Naomi came to talk to me about this opportunity and said she wanted to open a Pilates studio, it made perfect sense, because now it’s easier to find good classes!”
“We train together all the time, and sometimes he trains me,” Naomi adds. “I’d like to have eight more instructors. I’ll probably teach one or two classes and run the rest of the business.”

Jason, meanwhile, will remain “behind the scenes” but plan to attend classes “for as long as I can.”
“I find the Studio Pilates workouts to be very effective because they’re very targeted,” he says. “We really work one muscle group per class, so it’s very effective for me. I think Pilates is a female-centric exercise, but it doesn’t have to be. I think it’s a great addition to the other training I do. Everyone should do Pilates. I want to raise awareness of Pilates and Studio Pilates in the U.S. with this training. We’re trying to bring Pilates to people.”

Though the pair are still building out their studio, they’re “really excited” about what’s to come. “Our plan is to open a Studio Pilates at the university where our kids go to. To be honest, we’d love to open more, especially if it’s a big success.”
“We’re excited to be able to build this community and create a positive, amazing space that everyone can enjoy,” she continues. “That’s the biggest reward for us. The other big reward is actually helping people and seeing them get better.”
“It’s all about finding balance in life, right? I work in a totally different industry, but having a side hustle (if you want to call it that) gives me more balance in my life,” Jason concludes.
