HAMILTON — Walk for Wellness has returned to Veterans Park to promote health and wellness for seniors, enjoy the outdoors and build a community that helps others.
Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County (ICGMC) will hold their annual celebration and fundraiser on Saturday, June 1 at 9 a.m.
“Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County is committed to fostering a supportive environment for our elderly and disabled neighbors through the efforts of volunteers from various faith-based organizations,” event organizers said in a press release. “Our annual Wellness Walk is more than just a fundraiser; it’s a celebration of the kindness, dedication and unity that comes from a shared commitment to service.”
This is the third year that ICGMC has hosted this special event and attendance has grown every year since it began, reaching approximately 64 participants and is expected to surpass triple figures this year.
“Interface Caregivers of Greater Mercer County (ICGMC) is preparing to celebrate its 30th anniversary this July, a major milestone for such a small nonprofit,” ICGMC Executive Director Lori A. Harbison told The Trentonian. “We provide non-medical services to housebound seniors and adults with disabilities in and around Greater Mercer County. ICGMC matches trained volunteers with those in need of care and provides friendly visits, transportation assistance to appointments, grocery shopping, light housekeeping and even short-term respite care to assist family caregivers. All of our services are provided free of charge.”
Those interested in participating in the walk can register or donate online at www.icgmc.org/walk-for-wellness-2024.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the walk itself starting at 10 a.m. Participants should use the Kuser Road entrance at Veterans Park.
“ICGMC’s mission is to promote the independence, dignity and good health of the people we serve. The mental, emotional and social wellbeing of our care recipients is a top priority in everything we do, so we were looking for a way to involve community members in our health promotion activities,” said Harbison. “Promoting physical health is just one aspect of how we’ve been helping seniors age in place since 1994. All participants get the triple benefit of exercise from walking, the emotional benefit of socializing and building friendships, and the environmental benefit of spending time surrounded by nature.”
