Never apply moisturizer before toner. It’s easy.

But the order in which you apply your skincare products actually matters, and a dermatologist explains why getting it wrong could be a waste of money.

Dr. Michael I. Jacobs, board-certified dermatologist and associate professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College, We’ve explained why it’s important to use skin care products in the right order.

“If you don’t use the products in the correct order, you can reduce the effects of the products on your skin,” he said.

“For example, toner is used to balance the skin’s pH level after cleansing, so it’s important to use it as a second step for optimal results,” he continued.

“Also, we always recommend using SPF as the last step in your skin care routine, as layering products on top of SPF can alter the protection.

“A general rule of thumb when layering skincare products is to layer from thinnest to thickest.”

Neutrogena’s graphic shows the order in which products should be applied to achieve the best age-defying results.

The first of the six steps is to apply a skin-care cleanser.

Using a gel cleanser can help “boost” your skin’s moisture levels.

Next, remove the toner.

This prep step improves absorption of the remaining products.

To achieve a more radiant complexion, don’t forget to use a serum.

Afterwards, the brand recommends showing your eyes some love by applying a moisturizing eye cream.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, don’t skip using SPF.

They recommend incorporating sunscreen into your skin care routine, even if the clouds are out.

Advice for the times

Once you’ve got the basics down, Dr. Jacobs shares the best ingredients to add to your routine to prevent aging.

“Retinol is the product with the most proven evidence to help prevent the signs of aging if used consistently over time,” he said.

“Retinol works to keep skin looking youthful as you age by stimulating collagen production and increasing skin cell turnover.

At least when it comes to the face, he recommends using a quality moisturizer to keep skin hydrated and turn back time.

Hyaluronic acid serums are also effective in moisturizing and firming the skin.

He also explained how the most important anti-aging benefits come from our long-term habits.

That means refraining from smoking and prioritizing healthy eating.

If you’re willing to visit your dermatologist, he recommends undergoing radiofrequency, ultrasound, or laser to “target worrisome signs of aging.”

Fighting nasolabial folds

Even if you have already developed lines and wrinkles, there are ways to combat them.

“I recommend keeping it simple and focusing on hydration in your skin care routine, and also introducing retinol,” he said.

Again, he’s a big fan of Neutrogena products.

I think some women overcomplicate their skincare routines to 20 steps.

Dr. Michael I. Jacobs

“I recommend finding a moisturizer, such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin, that will keep your skin hydrated as you age,” he said.

Dr. Jacobs would further encourage you to wash your face twice every night to improve your skin’s health.

Wearing something with SPF 50+ during the day can also help prevent wrinkles.

never mind

With so many products on the market, Dr. Jacobs understands that it can sometimes be difficult to find what’s right for you, so he offers advice on what to avoid.

“It mainly depends on your particular skin type and concerns,” he said.

“Some additives, like facial oils and hydrating skin mists, can be beneficial for your skin, but they’re not essential for good skin care.”

Take a close look at your pores

Dr. Jacobs stressed the importance of cleaning and tightening pores.

“We recommend using products that contain the BHA ingredient salicylic acid, which penetrates the pores and helps exfoliate dead skin cells and sebum that has built up inside,” he said.

He’s also a fan of getting HydraFacials.

i love it

He explains that bags and dark circles under the eyes are often determined by genetics and lifestyle habits, and recommends products that reduce puffiness under the eyes as a countermeasure.

These include using eye creams that contain caffeine or niacinamide for a “skin-whitening” effect.

“Microneedling using radiofrequency and PRP may be effective,” he said.

Biggest mistake

In addition to following some great skin care rules, Dr. Jacobs also wants to advise people to avoid some common skin care mistakes.

“Basic skin care products like a good cleanser, toner, retinol, and moisturizer are often the most effective products for your skin, but some women overcomplicate their skin care routine to 20 steps. I think some people are.”

“Also, don’t expect your skin care routine to make a dramatic difference to your skin or reverse the signs of aging. You may need in-office treatments to see more noticeable results,” he continued.
