I’m a dermatologist – The truth about applying skin care in the right order and the products proven to be most effective at preventing aging

To optimize the results you get from your skin care routine, it’s important to do them in the right order.

Your dermatologist can also tell you about the products you should include in your skin care routine to help you look years younger.

Dr. Michael I. Jacobs, a board-certified dermatologist and associate professor of dermatology at Cornell University’s Weill Medical College, explained why it’s important to use skin care products correctly.

“If you don’t use the products in the correct order, it can reduce the product’s effect on your skin,” he said.

“For example, toners are used to balance the skin’s pH levels after cleansing, so it’s important to use a toner as a second step for optimal results,” he continued. .

“Also, layering products on top of SPF can change the protection it provides, so we always recommend using it as the last step in your skincare routine.

“A general rule of thumb when layering skin care products is to layer from thinnest to thickest.”

Skincare brand Neutrogena shared a diagram explaining the order in which to apply its products for best age-defying results.

Using certain items can make a “significant” difference.

The first of the six steps involves using a skin-care cleanser.

Infused with hyaluronic acid, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Gel Cleanser “boosts” your skin’s hydration levels.

Next, remove the toner.

A co-worker shared with me an Italian grandmother’s secret to beautiful skin. The one she bought for $5 has a weird smell, but it made her face feel cleaner.

This prep step improves absorption of the remaining products.

Don’t forget to use a serum to make your skin even more radiant.

She also recommends taking care of your eyes by using a moisturizing eye cream.

You can also quench your skin’s thirst with the brand’s Hydroboost Water Cream.

Described as being formulated with hyaluronic acid, additional hydrating ingredients, and three essential lip essentials, this will be your skin’s saving grace.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, don’t skip using SPF.

Even if the clouds are out, she recommends incorporating sunscreen into your skincare routine.

Advice for the times

Dr. Jacobs detailed the most important products and practices to combat the signs of aging.

He specifically swears by using retinol, which protects the skin.

“Retinol helps keep your skin youthful as you age by stimulating collagen production and promoting skin cell turnover,” he said.

At least when it comes to the face, he recommends using a quality moisturizer to keep skin hydrated and turn back time.

Hyaluronic acid serums are also a good way to keep your skin “moisturized and plump.”

He also explained that the most important anti-aging effects come from long-term habits.

That means refraining from smoking and prioritizing healthy eating.

If you’re willing to see a dermatologist, she recommends radiofrequency, ultrasound, and laser treatments to target worrisome signs of aging.

The fight against nasolabial folds

He also taught me what to use to fight fine lines and wrinkles.

“I recommend keeping it simple and focusing on hydration in your skincare routine and also introducing a retinol,” he said.

Once again, he is a huge fan of Neutrogena products.

“I recommend finding a moisturizer that helps your skin retain moisture as you age, such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin,” he says.

Dr. Jacobs wants to further encourage you to wash your face twice every night to improve your skin’s health.

Applying an SPF 50+ cream during the day can also help prevent wrinkles.

never mind

With so many items on the market, Dr. Jacobs understands how difficult it can be to find what’s right for you, and will advise you on what to avoid.

“It mainly depends on your skin type and concerns,” he said.

“While some additional products may be beneficial to the skin, they are not essential to proper skin care, like facial oils and hydrating skin mists.”

pour into pores

Dr. Jacobs stressed the importance of cleaning and tightening pores.

“We recommend using products that contain the BHA ingredient salicylic acid, which helps penetrate pores and exfoliate dead skin cells and oil build-up inside,” he said.

He also likes getting Hydrafacials.

I love it

He also wants you to make sure you don’t overlook the area around the eyes.

He explains that bags and dark circles under the eyes are often determined by genetics and lifestyle habits, and recommends products that reduce under-eye puffiness as a countermeasure.

These include using eye creams that contain caffeine or niacinamide for a “brightening” effect.

“Microneedling using radiofrequency and PRP may be effective,” he said.

biggest mistake

In addition to following some great skin care rules, Dr. Jacobs also wants to advise people to avoid some common skin care mistakes.

“Some women overcomplicate their skin care routine by requiring as many as 20 steps, even though basic items like a high-quality cleanser, toner, retinol, and moisturizer are the most effective products for their skin. I think some people are overdoing it.”

“Also, don’t expect your skin care routine to make dramatic changes to your skin or reverse the signs of aging. For more noticeable results, you’ll need in-office treatments.” ” he continued.
