OK, I admit I’m a stress ball. On any given day, I’m high-tempered at best (how can I stay calm when I always have a doctor’s appointment coming up or a dreaded ballet class?). But this year, while planning a wedding, publishing a book, and working full time, my anxiety has completely disappeared. What’s the conclusion? I’m desperate and willing to try anything.
So after reading about flower essences and their overall claims to soothe even the most tired nerves, I was ready to give it a try. For the uninitiated, flower essences are infusions made from flowering plants, each touted as effective against different ailments. Bach Rescue Remedy Natural Stress Relief ($21 for 2) contains rock rose, clematis, impatiens, cherry plum, and Star of Bethlehem, an elixir said to be calming and calming. So I put a few drops in my water bottle and drank it slowly throughout the day. In extremely stressful moments, I sucked on Bach Rescue Remedy lozenges ($6) as needed. (And oh, I needed them.) Here’s what happened.
At first I was very doubtful. When I read the scientific studies on Batch Rescue Remedies, the term “placebo effect” was thrown around a lot. a lot. So I carefully dipped my toes in flower essence water and started with lozenges. They were chewy and surprisingly tasteless, like stale gummy bears. At first they did nothing. I felt as nervous and unwell as usual during particularly adrenaline-heavy moments at work, but now instead of grinding my teeth I was munching on lozenges. But when you start adding essences to the mix; was I’m starting to feel a little calmer. After a few sips, I…calm. Maybe this worked out after all.
Then I actually started Love ritual. Every morning I woke up, put a few drops of flower essence in my water bottle and drank it all. Like drinking hot tea, the act of doing something a little nice for yourself (or is called Good) It was enough to start the day off right. I can’t say I stayed calm all day, but the whole routine felt very calming.
