SALT LAKE CITY – We often think of spring as a fresh, vibrant season, and one of the reasons for this is that the colors associated with spring have a positive effect on our mood.
Latest Let’s move with Maria In this podcast episode, Maria Cilaos spoke with practicing environmental psychologist Dr. Sally Augustine Learn the basics of color psychology and how to incorporate spring colors into your life to improve your mental health.
Spring colors have three key characteristics that play a role in improving our mental health: saturation, intensity, and lightness. These colors are usually low in saturation and lightness, which makes us feel relaxed when we look at them. Conversely, stronger, darker, more saturated colors can lift our mood.
“We have very specific responses to certain colours that we see in the spring and at other times of the year,” Dr Augustine said.
Red energizes us, but it also reduces our analytical abilities, so having too much red around your workspace is not a good idea. Green, on the other hand, boosts creativity, so it’s a great color to have right outside your office window.
Dr. Augustine says that the colors we choose depend on many factors, one of them being how extroverted or introverted we are.
“Extroverts tend to gravitate towards more saturated hues, while introverts tend to prefer less saturated colors,” she said.
Her first and biggest tip for using spring colors to boost your mental wellbeing is to choose colors that fit how you want to use your space.
