Getting through the summer – give yourself a mental health break

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) isn’t limited to winter, as there are several factors that can change your mood during the summer.

Seasonal depression usually occurs during the winter months. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is often caused by less daylight, but SAD isn’t limited to winter; for people with mental illnesses, the summer months can also be problematic.

Summer mental health triggers

According to a study by the American Physiological Society, rising temperatures can cause a spike in stress hormones, but it’s not just the heat (and humidity) that can cause summer SAD. Here are some other triggers:

  • heat – High temperatures can make you more susceptible to dehydration, making you lethargic and making it hard to sleep at night.
  • Summer Fashion – Summer means more revealing clothing, and therefore more pressure to have the perfect beach body.
  • Family Time – Kids are out of school and need more time and attention. There may be pressure to go on family trips or go on road trips in crowded cars.
  • big family – The “drunk uncle” can be a source of stress during the holidays and may even show up at summer family get-togethers. Interacting with someone you don’t see very often can lead to awkward conversations about careers, appearances, old grudges, and more.
  • Party time! Backyard barbecues, pool parties, boat trips, and picnics often involve alcohol (see: drunk uncle) and salty snacks, all of which can affect your metabolism and mood.

Summer mental health relief

Focus on calming activities to keep your mind healthy. Here are seven suggestions to banish the summer blues.

  1. Get outside and explore – sunlight is a great source of Vitamin D, which impacts mental health.
  2. Start a garden. Working with your hands is a great tool for increasing mindfulness.
  3. Create a summer playlist. Music gets you in the mood.
  4. Use your time off to plan a vacation that will allow you to completely unwind from the pressures of work and refocus.
  5. Cleaning. It’s not as exciting as a trip to a cabin or the lake, but cleaning your room can improve your mental health. Don’t try to clean your entire house or apartment, though. Focus on one room at a time.
  6. Attend local events – some people thrive when they’re with people who are having fun – if that’s not your thing, just walk away.
  7. Practice yoga or meditation outdoors – nature can speak to you if you listen carefully. Maintain a healthy sleep schedule.

Here are some additional resources to support your mental health:

The National Alliance on Mental Illness Minnesota (NAMI MN) has a long list of resources and support options for individuals and families.
