All Ages Event (In-Person)
IN PERSON: Eclipse Picnic (*RR)
Monday, April 8, 2pm
A total solar eclipse will be visible from many parts of the United States on Monday April 8, 2024. While no location in Massachusetts will experience totality, some parts of the state will see over 95% coverage of the sun if weather permits. All ages are invited to TPL’s Eclipse Picnic for a viewing of the eclipse on the library’s back lawn. This event starts at 2:00pm with 95% coverage projected for just before 3:30pm. To learn more about the projected path, please click here. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs and snacks to enjoy during the event. Parking is available in the library’s main parking lot. Minimal parking is available in the field across from the library and at the first State Hospital parking lot off of Hospital Road, a short walk from TPL. Parking is not available along Hospital Road or Chandler Street. Free eclipse glasses will be available for attendees at the event, while supplies last.

IN PERSON: Seed Selection & Seed Starting (*RR)
Monday, April 8, 7pm
Join Gretel Anspach — a Trustee of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and a Lifetime Master Gardener with the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association — to learn all about seed selection and seed starting. Starting your plants from seeds is cheaper than buying transplants and offers a much broader variety of plants. Whether you are interested in annuals, perennials, edibles, or even shrubs and trees, Gretel will give you all the information you need, from selecting seeds to planting them in the ground.
IN PERSON: Meditation Class (*RR)

Chris Connolly, RN, BSN, owner of “Living My Dream Yoga,” will lead a 4-week series of meditation classes. Classes will take place from 11am to noon over three consecutive Wednesdays – April 3, 10, 17 and 24 — in the library’s Meeting Room. Classes are designed for both those who are new to meditation and regular practitioners.

Join us in person to read and discuss poems monthly on the second Wednesday of each month from 1:30pm to 3pm. All poems are distributed one week prior to the meeting and are available in print at the library or via email.
IN PERSON: Non-Fiction Book Group: A Castle in Wartime (*RR)

Join us for a discussion of “A Castle in Wartime: One Family, Their Missing Sons, and the Fight to Defeat the Nazis” by Catherine Bailey. This discussion will be conducted in person in the First Floor Meeting Room. No registration required. Copies of the book are available for check out at the Front Desk.

Enjoy a screening of one of Hollywood’s newest DVD releases – “Poor Things,” which received 11 Academy Award nominations this year, including a Win for Best Lead Actress. The incredible tale about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe. Comedy/Drama/Romance. Rated R. 2 Hours, 21 minutes. Doors will open at 7pm. Pizza & water will be served. A $2 donation is suggested. VIRTUAL: Seen By Sea — An Appreciation of the New England Coast (*RR)
Monday, April 8, 7pm
Take a virtual trip from Providence, Rhode Island to Bar Harbor, Maine to enjoy the sights and histories of New England’s many scenic ports. This was the route of author Alison O’Leary’s 700-mile summer sailing adventure on her 25-foot sailboat, “Esmeralda.” In this program, O’Leary provides insight into the industries, immigrants and traditions that shaped our coastal towns while narrating humorous and interesting points. O’Leary is the author of several books, including “Best Day Hikes Near Boston,” and co-author with Michael Tougias of “Attacked at Sea.” She is a longtime journalist who has worked for a number of publications, including as a correspondent for the “Boston Globe” and editor of “The Boston Parents’ Paper.”
VIRUTAL: JOB SEARCH HELP – Resume Writing Review (*RR)

In a round table format, discuss resume writing in general, including how to address key word search techniques. Then dissect both chronological and functional resume samples. Led by Gary Gekow, a Senior Employment Specialist/Career Coach with 30 years of recruiting and employment services experience in the Boston staffing industry. VIRTUAL: The Life & Times of Jazz Icon Louis Armstrong (*RR)

In the beginning of Jazz, there was “Satchmo” Louis Armstrong. This grandson of slaves, iconic trumpeter and vocalist brings jazz from the brothels of Storyville, New Orleans to the bright lights of New York City. Explore Armstrong’s influential rise to stardom while the Chicago and New York mob fought over this charismatic Jazz star. Led by professional jazz singer and lecturer Nanette Perrotte, who has a BA in Jazz Composition from Berklee School of Music and an MA in Education from Lesley University.

VIRTUAL: A Visit with the Addison Gallery of American Art (‘Photography & The American South’) (*RR)

Gregory Harris — Keough Family Curator of Photography from the High Museum in Atlanta — and Sarah Kennel — Aaron Siskind Curator of Photography and Director of the Raysor Center at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond — will lead participants on a virtual tour through the works and themes presented in the Addison Gallery of American Art’s latest exhibition, “A Long Arc: Photography and the American South Since 1845.” The first major survey of Southern photography in 25 years, A Long Arc examines the South’s place in the history of photography and reveals the region’s critical impact on the evolution of the medium.
VIRTUAL: Doing Genealogy Without Breaking The Bank (*RR)

The number of genealogy websites, organizations, and publications can be daunting. This session explores techniques to save money on subscriptions and genealogy education. Learn how to find free resources, how to take advantage of trial memberships, and how to target your genealogy dollars. The most valuable genealogical sources are the ones that contain information about your family. Learn how to find them. This session covers the pros and cons of the top sites for searching genealogical databases, as well as in-person research. Led by genealogist Sara Campbell. Lecturer, educator, author and editor, Sara has experience teaching non-credit courses in various genealogical topics at local colleges, and speaking to societies and library groups around the New England region.
VIRTUAL: Explore Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night” (*RR)

Examine Vincent van Gogh’s life, character and spiritual emptiness in the period that followed the most exciting time in history; when worldviews were eternally changed by the renaissance, the protestant and catholic reformation, the scientific revolution and the period of enlightenment. Most importantly, explore his most famous painting, Starry Night, and his emotional, philosophical, scientific insights and theological beliefs behind this painting. Additionally, look at several of his other paintings along with Hubble photos of the cosmos, that when shown with expressive thought, bring incredible insight into the relationship between art, faith, reason and nature. Led by Scott Flaig, author of “Cosmology: Faith and Science Reveal Universal Truth” and “Pillars of Creation: How Faith, Science and Reason Bring Meaning to the Universe.” Flaig, a retired corporate executive from Dell and former faculty instructor at Florida Gulf Coast University, now lectures regularly about the mysteries of the universe at libraries, community organizations, churches, universities and science societies.
VIRTUAL: How To Supplement Your Income Buying & Selling Antiques & Collectibles (*RR)

While the Antiques & Collectibles market has softened in recent years, bargains still abound if you know what to do and where to look. Learn how you can supplement your income, regardless of your age or experience, by buying and selling antiques and collectibles. Discover more than 25 ways and places you can buy & sell, while also receiving ideas, tips, strategies, and vignettes. (NOTE: This program is not magic and you won’t become rich just by taking it. But you will learn about valuable tools, and what you can do to supplement your income, whether you’re a retiree or millennial.) Led by Mike Ivankovich, a professional appraiser and auctioneer. Ivankovich has authored more than 20 books about the antiques and collectibles business, and hosts the “What’s It Worth? Ask Mike The Appraiser” radio show.

Join us for a poetry-themed craft, DIY Mini-Magnetic Poetry! We will be customizing upcycled mint tins and using magazine cut-outs and sticky-back magnetic sheets to make our own word magnets. Materials will be provided for every registered attendee, so be sure to register while supplies last! Each session lasts for 15 minutes in private – just you, Diamond, and her human Mom, Suzanne. Bring your own book or borrow one of ours to read. This is a great way to build literacy confidence and fluency with a non-judgmental canine reading partner! For students reading independently in Grades K to 5.

The Community Teamwork Family Resource Network is here weekly! Practice using your home language with us! Our staff will be here with an interpreter speaking Haitian Creole. At our playgroup we will work on Early Literacy skills and more! Ask CTI about any resources they can help provide for you and your family. This program is for children aged 0-5. The Family Resource Network is funded by the Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Grant (CFCE) from the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care.
