Summer brings longer days, warmer temperatures and more outdoor activities, but it also brings its own unique mental health challenges. Understanding how summer affects mental health and exploring strategies to manage anxiety and depression can help residents maintain a healthy mindset during this vibrant season.

The benefits of summer sunlight are well known. Exposure to sunlight increases the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that elevates mood and promotes a sense of well-being. This natural increase is especially beneficial for those suffering from depression. Spending time outdoors, whether that’s a walk through your local park, enjoying a day at the beach, or simply relaxing in your backyard, can have a positive impact on your mental health.

But summer also brings challenges. Increased social activities and expectations can lead to anxiety, and extreme heat can exacerbate feelings of lethargy and irritability. For students and seasonal workers, especially, disruptions to schedules over the summer can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression.

Trillium Health Resources Trillium plays a vital role in supporting individuals with serious mental illnesses, intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), substance use disorders and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). We provide critical health care services that improve health and support people to live happier lives. Trillium also serves the uninsured and Medicaid recipients through NC Medicaid Direct, Behavioral Health and Intellectual/Developmental Disability Tailored Plans and other programs. These programs are essential to addressing mental health issues, especially during the summer.

Community resources are also available to support mental health needs. Coastal Horizon We operate a mobile clinic that serves the local community, providing accessible mental health services. You can reach us through our mobile clinic webpage or by calling 1-910-619-7117. Additionally, RHA Health Services We serve multiple counties in Eastern North Carolina through our Mobile Care Unit. For more information, please visit our webpage or call 1-866-400-4RHA.

Establishing healthy lifestyle habits is essential for managing your mental health over the summer. Regular physical activity, even light exercise such as swimming or walking, can dramatically boost your mood and reduce anxiety. It’s also important to stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet, as dehydration and poor nutrition can have a negative impact on your mental health.

Mindfulness practices such as meditation and yoga can help manage stress and anxiety. These practices promote relaxation and are particularly effective in dealing with increased social pressures in the summer. Establishing a regular sleep schedule is also important. Longer days can disrupt normal sleep patterns, leading to increased stress and irritability.

Getting professional help is crucial for anyone experiencing serious mental health issues. The help you need can be found through Coastal Horizons, RHA Health programs, or programs offered by Trillium Health Resources. Mental health professionals can provide customized coping mechanisms and interventions to address the unique challenges of the summer months.

Maintaining mental health during the summer requires proactive measures. Developing healthy habits, benefiting from sunlight, and utilizing local resources can help you cope effectively with the changing seasons. With the support of groups like Trillium Health Resources, we can ensure everyone has access to the care they need and foster a year-round community where mental health is a priority.
