Bernadette’s workout routine includes walking and weightlifting. “Weightlifting is said to be very good for cognitive performance,” she adds. “It also builds muscle on your bones, which is important because it makes your bones stronger.”
“I do everything I can to stay healthy and youthful, and eating right is one of those things, so desserts like this are a good thing,” she says, citing a clean diet that includes fresh fish and vegetables, and admits, “I’m lucky in that I have good genes.”
On Mindfulness and Meditation:
Bernadette meditates daily and believes it’s the secret to feeling her best. “The key is to use your mind. [pay attention to] How are you thinking? Really look at your thoughts and think, “Maybe I don’t want to be negative today. Maybe I can choose to think positively.”
“This year I’ve learned to be more compassionate and grateful,” she said.
On teaming up with the Breyers again:
“I had a great time. [the commercials] “That was 30 years ago. I looked it up and found it on YouTube. I didn’t even know about it,” she said.
“The campaign is a lot of fun because it’s just like any other anti-aging cream, except instead of putting it on your face, you put it on your tongue,” she points out.
About pets:
The two-time Tony Award winner is also an animal lover; she co-founded Broadway Barks with Mary Tyler Moore and hosts an annual star-studded adoption event, this year’s event taking place on August 3. “The Broadway community loves it; it’s become their event, and it’s like they’re getting pet therapy between shows on Saturday,” she says.
The adoption advocate says her home’s atmosphere is anchored by two dogs, “one in each hand, a pit bull with pink pearls and a big, furry dog.” “When I wake up in the morning and see my animals, my dog or my cat, I immediately feel happy. It’s the perfect start to my day.”
A dog in each hand and a bit of Breyers on the tongue — what more could a woman need to stay young?
