The program will be held Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Road, Avon.
There, participants learn something called “Mental Health First Aid” to help them identify, understand and address the signs of mental illness or substance use disorder.
“This training will equip them with the skills they need to reach out to people who may be experiencing mental health or substance use issues, provide initial support and connect them to appropriate care,” the town said in a statement.
The issues to be discussed are:
• Common signs and symptoms of mental illness.
• Common signs and symptoms of drug use.
• How to interact with someone in crisis.
• How to connect the person to help.
• Expanded content on trauma, addiction and self-care.
Anyone can take this course, but it will be particularly useful to employers, police officers, hospital staff, emergency personnel, faith leaders, community members and simply caring people.
This is a full-day program, so participants are encouraged to bring a packed lunch. A refrigerator and microwave are available in the community room.
Classes are limited to 30 students.
