What is ADHD?
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that typically begins in childhood and persists into adulthood. ADHD is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interferes with functioning and development.
ADHD symptoms are generally divided into two categories: inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity.
Carelessness
- Difficulty maintaining attention on tasks or play activities
- Making frequent careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities
- Difficulty organizing tasks and activities
- Avoidance or dislike of tasks that require sustained mental effort
- Frequently losing items necessary for work
- Easily distracted by external stimuli
- Forgetfulness in everyday life
Hyperactivity and impulsivity
- Fidgeting or tapping of hands and feet
- Unable to remain seated in situations where you must remain seated
- Running or climbing in inappropriate conditions
- Unable to play or be active quietly
- Talking excessively
- blurt out the answer before the question is finished
- I don’t like waiting my turn
- Interrupting or disrupting other people’s conversations or games
A diagnosis is usually made by a medical professional based on these symptoms, the duration of symptoms, and the extent to which the symptoms impact an individual’s life. Symptoms must be present for at least six months and be inappropriate for the individual’s developmental level.
The exact cause of ADHD is unknown, but several factors are thought to play a role, including genetics, brain structure and function, and environmental influences. Risk factors include a family history of ADHD, prenatal exposure to tobacco and alcohol, and premature birth.
ADHD is usually managed with a combination of behavioral therapy, medication, and educational support. Stimulant medications such as methylphenidate and amphetamines are commonly prescribed and are effective in reducing symptoms. Non-stimulant medications are also available. Behavioral therapy focuses on developing organizational skills, improving focus, and controlling impulsivity. Educational interventions often include customized teaching strategies and classroom adjustments.
