EL PASO, Texas — ABC-7’s Be Mindful reporter Avery Martinez has been recognized by the Texas Medical Association for her reporting on abortion and mental health. She won the award for excellence in short form television news for her story, “Mothers and doctors challenge abortion law in Texas Supreme Court.”
This is one of the Anson Jones, M.D. awards, which recognize journalists across the state for “excellence in reporting on health issues.” Local medical experts presented the award to Avery today.
“This is obviously an issue that’s been simmering for a while – abortion and state laws across the board. Women and access has become a very hot topic,” said one of the awards’ presenters.
TMA officials told ABC-7 that Avery is the first journalist in El Paso to receive the award.
Avery has received numerous awards at the national and local levels for his reporting, including international reporting fellowships with the Commonwealth Fund and the Society of Healthcare Journalists, and was named the Frank M. Adams Award media recipient by the Texas Council of Community Centers.
Avery came to ABC-7 to cover mental health in the borderlands as part of Report for America, an initiative of the GroundTruth Project, an award-winning nonprofit journalism organization dedicated to reimagining journalism from the ground up.
