Diabetes and Ayurveda: Ingredients you need to control your blood sugar levels | Health

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin or the insulin produced is not utilized by the body to regulate blood sugar levels. This fluctuation therefore causes blood sugar levels to rise and sometimes fall. The Indian Council of Medical Research recently released startling data that shows that around 110 million Indians suffer from diabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels cannot be controlled.

While the overall prevalence of diabetes is recorded at 11.4%, a shocking 15.3% of the population is in the pre-diabetic group, meaning that if not treated properly at the right time, they may succumb to diabetes at any time.According to Ayurvedic experts, Ayurveda is a treasure trove of herbs that help regulate imbalanced body functions and when combined with exercise and yoga, it can help control insulin levels.

Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Ayurvedic expert Pradeep Srivastava from Krishna’s Herbs and Ayurveda said, “The benefits of many herbs, fruits and vegetables are clearly mentioned in Ayurvedic literature. For instance, karela or bitter gourd is known to increase insulin secretion. For diabetics, it is a great vegetable to include in their diet. Jamun or Indian blackberry is already popular among the masses for its amazing taste, while jamun seeds, when powdered and consumed, help regulate blood sugar levels.”

He revealed, “There are other herbs mentioned in Ayurveda as well. Gudhmar is a liver stimulant, so it works on the underlying cause and supports the liver to function efficiently. Kutuki also keeps blood sugar levels in check. For diabetics, it is important to keep the entire body functioning properly. Giloy balances the tridoshas of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Methi strengthens the nervous system and Amla is rich in Vitamin C and helps in improving the overall immunity of the body. Neem is a natural detoxifier and flushes out all the toxins from the body. Including Triphala and Khara Dal also helps in digestion and ultimately keeps the entire body system healthy.”

Is it possible to source and consume such a wide variety of herbs every day? Pradeep Srivastava replies, “In our busy lives, we strive to find the right solutions but are looking for an easier way. For such people, there are special juices in the market that combine all these beneficial herbs. If these individual herbs are so effective in managing diabetes levels, imagine the benefits of such juices. However, make sure that the juices you consume are made from raw ingredients and not extracts. Raw ingredients are more beneficial as they are fresh and contain more nutrients as compared to extracts. Also, make sure that such juices do not have any added colours or sugar and do not contain any chemical preservatives.”

He explained, “Not only does this juice regulate blood sugar levels, it is also good for heart health, has good antioxidant properties, aids in digestion, ensures weight management, boosts metabolism and also nourishes and hydrates the body. Just drink 30ml of juice with a glass of warm water on an empty stomach upon waking and 30 minutes after dinner. You will see immediate results. Thus, switching to this natural method and relying on Ayurveda can help in controlling diabetes. When combined with disciplined living, exercise and dietary management, it can even reverse type 2 diabetes in some cases.”
