The smell of lemons can help you improve concentration, and a Japanese study into the effect of scent on typists’ accuracy found that people who worked in lemon-scented workspaces made 54% fewer errors. According to Natural Health Magazine, scientists have also found that “mere exposure to the scent of lemon can increase happy hormones and lower stress levels.”

The spicy scent of peppermint can help improve focus and attention. It has been shown to boost attention and memory compared to the scent of ylang-ylang. If you find yourself constantly distracted by what’s going on around you, you might want to consider diffusing peppermint essential oil in your home office.

Most people drink coffee for the caffeine boost, but the mere smell of coffee can also improve performance on analytical reasoning tasks. According to FragranceX, “the aroma has a similar effect to drinking coffee.”

Lavender is often used for its relaxing and sleep-inducing effects. However, “lavender essential oil” [was inhaled] When participants smelled lavender before solving math problems, they were able to solve them faster and more accurately than a control group.” The scent of lavender has also been shown to reduce cortisol, a stress hormone that can cause irritability and reduced concentration.

One study found that Spanish sage essential oil can enhance memory and stimulate brain function, and its scent “significantly improved immediate word recall” in study participants. The strong scent of sage is also said to reduce stress and anxiety and lift the mood, making it a great scent to have around the home.

Inhaling the scent of vetiver can improve attention and brain function, making your brain feel more alert when you’re feeling foggy or struggling to stay focused. A 2016 study concluded that “the stimulating effects of vetiver essential oil may be beneficial for learning and memory processes” and it can be used as a stimulant to improve task performance.
