Kengo Kuma weaves intricate lattices

architect Known for his masterful use of natural materials, Kengo Kuma has woven his signature style into the AEAJ Green Terrace. The three-storey structure is constructed from warm cedar and cypress, all sustainably sourced from domestic forests. Slender beams intertwine in a mesmerizing latticework that recalls traditional Japanese woodworking techniques. This intricate structure not only evokes historical and cultural connections, but also serves as a powerful visual expression of the interconnectedness between nature and human well-being.

Sunlight filtering in through the lattice casts patterned shadows inside the building, further blurring the boundary between the building and the natural environment. Large windows and a rooftop terrace connect the interior with the surrounding greenery and city views.

Architecture as an aroma diffuser

The team at Kengo Kuma & Associates have further designed the intricate wooden structure to enhance visitors’ olfactory experience. The building itself acts as a giant diffuser, with the porous nature of wood allowing the essential oils used throughout the facility to be subtly released. A gentle ventilation system further disperses the scents, creating a multi-sensory journey that stimulates not only the nose but also the mind and body. The internal layout places great emphasis on exploring this sense. Dedicated spaces such as the “Aroma Lab” and “Aroma Library” encourage exploration and learning, while the calming “Aroma Lounge” offers a retreat for relaxation and reflection. Natural materials other than wood are also used throughout, with stone floors and muted earth tones further enhancing the tranquil atmosphere.
