The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says bacteria found in recalled aromatherapy in the home of a Georgia patient with melioidosis have been linked to that patient and three other patients in Kansas, Minnesota, Texas, and Georgia. The virus was found to be genetically consistent with a bacterial strain of the same species,” the CPSC said. “The bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei causes dandruff, a condition that is difficult to diagnose and can be fatal. Patients in Georgia and Kansas die
The recall was initiated after the CDC took samples from a bottle of Gemstone Lavender and Chamomile-scented essential oil-infused aromatherapy room spray from the Georgia victim’s home and discovered the presence of deadly bacteria. .
Subsequent testing showed that the genetic fingerprint of the bacteria in the bottle matched the genetic fingerprint of bacteria identified in four patients. This allowed the CDC to confirm that the spray or one of its ingredients caused four leprosy infections.
The recalled aromatherapy spray was sold for about $4 at approximately 55 Walmart stores and online from February 2021 to October 2021. The front label of the 5-ounce glass bottle has “Better Homes and Gardens Aromatherapy” printed on it.
