Dry Eye Awareness Month: Dry eye syndrome, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is a common condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears or the right quality of tears to properly moisten the eyes. This can result in symptoms such as dryness, irritation, redness, grittiness and blurred vision. Factors that contribute to dry eye syndrome include aging, hormonal changes, prolonged screen use, environmental conditions, and certain medical conditions and medications. The syndrome can significantly impact daily activities and overall quality of life.
According to Dr Biswas Ranjan, Senior Consultant, BAMS and Health Global, here are eight Ayurvedic remedies that may help prevent and relieve the symptoms of dry eye syndrome.

Triphala eyewash: Triphala is a blend of three fruits (Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki) known for its cleansing properties. To prepare it, boil Triphala in water, strain the mixture and allow it to cool. Use the cooled solution as an eyewash, where it can relieve dryness, reduce inflammation, cleanse the eyes, and promote overall eye health and comfort.
Uses of Ghee: Pure cow’s ghee (clarified butter) is known for its nourishing and lubricating properties. Dab a small amount around the eyelids before bedtime. Ghee helps retain moisture, soothes irritation and reduces inflammation. Its natural lubricating properties support eye health and comfort, preventing dryness and making it an effective treatment to maintain the delicate skin around the eyes.
Cucumber slices: Place cucumber slices on your eyes to instantly relieve dryness and irritation. Cucumber is known for its cooling and moisturizing properties. Its natural antioxidants and high water content help hydrate the eyes, reduce puffiness and soothe irritation. Relax with cucumber slices on your eyes for 10-15 minutes to feel the refreshing effect.

Rose water: A gentle, soothing remedy for dry eyes. Pure rose water eye drops refresh and moisturize your eyes, helping to reduce dryness and irritation. Rose water’s natural anti-inflammatory properties provide a cooling, refreshing effect that soothes irritation, promotes moisture, and greatly reduces the discomfort associated with dry eyes.
Aloe Vera Gel: Known for its moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties, applying around the eyes can help relieve dry eyes. Carefully apply a small amount of pure aloe vera gel around the eye area, avoiding direct contact with the eye. Aloe vera moisturizes the skin, reduces inflammation, soothes irritation, and provides moisture and comfort to dry eyes.
Castor oil: Cold-pressed, pure castor oil is the perfect natural lubricant for dry eyes. Place a drop of castor oil in each eye before bed. The oil’s thick consistency locks in moisture, reduces evaporation, and provides a protective barrier against dryness. Its anti-inflammatory properties soothe irritation, promote eye health, and relieve dry eyes.

Fennel tea compress: Fennel tea has anti-inflammatory properties that make it effective in relieving dry eye symptoms. Prepare the fennel tea, let it cool and then soak a clean cloth in the tea. Place the cloth over closed eyes for 10-15 minutes. The compress reduces inflammation, soothes and moisturizes, providing gentle yet effective relief from dry eye symptoms.
Blinking exercises: Practicing regular blinking helps keep your eyes moist and prevent dry eyes. Blinking spreads your natural tears evenly across the surface of your eyes, keeping them moist. Practice blinking often and often, especially during extended periods of screen time or concentration. This reduces eye fatigue, keeps your eyes moist, and promotes eye health, which is essential in preventing dry eyes.
