When buying a shower steamer, there are a few important features to keep in mind. While the right steamer for you will often come down to personal preference, you should also look at the following specs:
Fragrance Type
Some steamers are scented with artificial ingredients, while others get their scent from essential oils. “If you choose a shower steamer that’s scented solely with essential oils, you’re getting a higher-quality product,” says Donahue. They tend to be more expensive than artificially scented steamers, but they’re more effective and last longer.
Donahue also warns, “Beware of misleading labels like ‘contains essential oils’ as this often indicates that the product contains a blend of artificial fragrances and some essential oils.”
Pigments
Many shower steamers are dyed using various types of pigments. Because your skin and airways will be exposed to the steam from the dissolving shower bomb, it’s important to use safe, high-quality ingredients. “Naturally derived mineral pigments, such as iron oxides, mica, and titanium dioxide, are generally gentler on the skin compared to synthetic dyes,” says integrative aesthetician Elisha Reverby. “They carry a lower risk of skin irritation and allergic reactions, making them a safer option for those with sensitive skin.”
Meanwhile, Reverby points out that “synthetic dyes, which are often made from petrochemicals and harsh ingredients, are known to cause skin irritation and allergic reactions, and to disrupt the skin’s barrier function.” Check ingredient labels carefully, especially if you have sensitive skin. And avoid shower steamers, which can cause irritation.
scent
Scents have a strong impact on your mood and state of mind. Scents like lavender and vanilla are known to be calming and sleep-inducing. Others, like mint and citrus, are more awake and invigorating. Shower steamers come in a variety of scents, so you might want to choose your favorite scent to lift your mood at different times of the day.
