The Statesboro Tai Chi Group celebrated World Tai Chi Day with a performance on the courthouse steps Saturday morning, showcasing the health benefits of practicing Tai Chi for the mind and body. Dr. Lee said Tai Chi’s origins are as a martial arts practice that enhances one’s ability in hand-to-hand combat. Over the past several hundred years, it has gradually evolved to emphasize health, balance, and strength.
Because the Statesboro Tai Chi group is primarily comprised of people between the ages of 65 and 85, the training focuses on fall prevention. Dr. Lee said that in the seven years of this group meeting, not one of the more than 20 participants has been seriously ill or injured, or even contracted the coronavirus during the pandemic.
