Kathmandu, June 19 (PTI) The Indian Embassy in Nepal on Wednesday organised a yoga demonstration on the banks of Phewa Lake in Pokhara, a famous tourist destination in western Nepal, ahead of the 10th International Yoga Day.
Since its declaration by the United Nations on December 11, 2014, the world celebrates June 21 as International Day of Yoga.

According to a press release from the Indian Embassy, the event aimed to promote the ancient practice of yoga for health and wellbeing.
“The event saw enthusiastic participation from the local community, including local administration officials, members of various local yoga organisations, retired Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Army and officials from the Pension Payment Office in Pokhara,” it said.

The celebrations began early in the morning with a series of yoga sessions led by experienced yoga instructors.
These sessions introduced various asanas (postures), pranayamas (breathing exercises) and meditation techniques.
“Participants were instructed on the mind-body benefits of each practice, emphasizing yoga’s holistic approach to mind-body wellness,” the press release said.
The Indian Embassy in collaboration with Pokhara University also organised yoga demonstrations and health consultations by Ayurvedic experts for the students and faculty of the university.
According to a press release, renowned yoga instructors gave lectures to a large audience, especially young people, on the benefits of yoga and its practicality in everyday life.
The Chief Guest of the event, Prof. Prem Narayan Ariyal, Vice Chancellor, Pokhara University, thanked the Indian Embassy for organising the event and encouraged the participating students to explore the benefits of yoga for leading a healthy life both physically and mentally.
Speaking at the United Nations in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed designating June 21 as Yoga Day because it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.
The United Nations subsequently designated June 21 as International Yoga Day. The first was held in 2015.
