An Instagram post shared tips on how to stimulate hair growth, saying, “Turn your head upside down and massage your scalp daily to increase blood flow to your hair follicles.”

Nidhi Govil, CEO of Orive Organics, says, “Incorporating inverted scalp massage into your wellness routine has several key benefits. Firstly, it increases blood circulation to the scalp, improving nutrient delivery to hair follicles and promoting healthier hair growth. Additionally, it relieves tension in the scalp muscles and around the neck, reducing headaches and promoting overall relaxation.”

“Incorporating inverted scalp massage into your wellness routine can have a profound effect on your overall health,” says Dr. Mickey Singh, renowned cosmetic dermatologist, CoolSculpting expert, and designer of BodyCraft Clinic. Blood flow to the scalpThis helps deliver more nutrients and oxygen to your hair follicles. This increased circulation promotes healthier hair growth and improves scalp vitality.”

Contributes to scalp and hair health

An upside-down scalp massage may temporarily increase blood circulation by turning your head upside down, distributing natural oils along the hair shaft, helping to moisturize hair and reducing dryness and brittleness, says Dr Singh.

According to Dr Gobir, an inverted scalp massage promotes relaxation and stress relief through a combination of gentle pressure and soothing movements. The inverted portion of the massage also helps relieve tension in the neck and shoulders, further enhancing the overall relaxation effect.

“Physically stimulating the nerves in your scalp helps release stress-relieving hormones such as serotonin and endorphins, leading to an overall feeling of relaxation and well-being,” says Dr Singh.

Addressing certain scalp conditions

“Inverted scalp massage may be beneficial for people with slow hair growth or tight scalp muscles that cause tension headaches,” adds Dr Singh.

“Upside-down scalp massage is particularly effective for scalp conditions such as dandruff and dryness. Increasing blood flow to the scalp nourishes it and Moisturizes the skin“The massaging action helps exfoliate dead skin cells and unclog hair follicles,” explains Dr Govil.

However, it’s important to note that if you have a scalp infection, open wounds, or severe hair loss, you should avoid this method as it can make the problem worse, Dr. Singh points out.

Comparison with other technologies

Compared to other scalp massage techniques, inverted scalp massage may have unique benefits, such as increased circulation and relaxation due to the inversion, according to Dr. Gobir. However, the effectiveness of any scalp massage technique ultimately depends on your personal preferences and needs.

Potential long-term effects

Doing this consistently may also help maintain your scalp’s natural moisture and reduce the occurrence of dryness and dandruff, but like any habit, it’s important to do it in moderation and to watch for side effects like dizziness or increased hair loss, suggests Dr. Singh.
