Healthy employees are happier, more efficient and Recently, the fact that it shows good performance has been attracting more and more attention. Organizations are now taking steps to go beyond simple employee fitness to ensure wellbeing, including mental health. The reason is simple. Because health directly impacts not only job satisfaction and performance, but also the morale, outcomes, and performance of the entire organization.

Business leaders and human resources professionals also believe that prioritizing employee health reduces absenteeism, lost work time, and high turnover rates, and helps organizations reduce the time and resources it takes to recruit and train new staff. It points out that you can save on both. “There has been a marked shift in how companies approach the health of their employees, especially mental health. Dr Shaunak Ajinkya, consultant psychiatrist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, says there are many benefits, from increased productivity to a positive organizational culture. “When employees feel mentally well, they are better able to focus, make informed decisions, and contribute effectively to their work. This ultimately improves productivity. It also reduces stress and anxiety, which can worsen or cause other major mental health problems such as panic attacks, depression, substance abuse, schizophrenia, and suicidality. It also helps.”

He cites a recent McKinsey study that found 47% of respondents feel anxious if they don’t receive clear communication from their company about the future. Ajinkya added that employees who feel supported are more likely to continue coming to work. “Research shows that a positive work environment fosters higher levels of engagement and commitment, leading to improved employee performance and job satisfaction,” he says.

Ajinkya explains that when one employee struggles, it can affect the morale of the entire team, negatively impacting collaboration and overall performance. When organizations proactively address mental health, they create a culture of empathy, understanding, and support. This increases your chances of attracting and retaining top talent.

“Laws and regulations increasingly require employers to provide psychologically safe workplaces and reasonable accommodations for mental health conditions. Failure to meet these obligations can result in significant costs. This could lead to such lawsuits and reputational damage,” Ajinkya added.

To ensure the health of their employees, organizations take various measures such as flexible working hours, comprehensive medical insurance, yoga sessions, meditation classes, mental health awareness campaigns, and sports and fitness competitions.

“We have a large population of Gen Z within our organization, so it’s important that we prioritize both their mental and physical health. This generation is keenly aware of the importance of staying healthy at work. ” Venugopal added.
