When it comes to home remedies, we often turn to the ancient system of Ayurveda, which is packed with remedies to cure common ailments using simple ingredients found in your kitchen. From soothing digestive troubles with ginger tea to relieving headaches with peppermint oil, Ayurveda harnesses the healing power of natural ingredients. Turmeric for inflammation, honey for sore throats, and neem for skin conditions are just a few of the Ayurvedic remedies that have stood the test of time. Rooted in centuries of traditional wisdom, these home remedies offer gentle yet effective solutions to promote health and wellness, making Ayurveda a trusted ally in maintaining balance and vitality in your daily life. In this article, we will talk about the benefits of consuming munakka (black grape raisins) soaked with saffron. This centuries-old practice is more than just a culinary tradition, it is a powerful wellness ritual that has a profound impact on your health. We spoke to Shweta Shah, Founder of EatFit24/7 and Celebrity Nutritionist, who told us more about this combination.

What is Munakka?
Munakka, also known as dried black grapes or raisins, is known in Ayurveda for its rejuvenating and medicinal properties. When soaked overnight, munakka takes on a plump and juicy texture that is infused with its hydrating essence. This process not only improves the texture but also unlocks its inherent nutritional value, making it easier for your body to absorb the nutrients.

Meanwhile, saffron, or kesar, which is obtained from the crocus flower, is known for its rich aroma, vibrant color, and therapeutic properties. Known as the “golden spice,” saffron contains a host of health-promoting compounds, including crocin, crocetin, and safranal, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mood-enhancing properties.

According to Shweta, “These two ingredients combined are chock full of health benefits. Munakka is said to be rich in iron, which is essential for maintaining healthy haemoglobin levels in the blood. Saffron further enhances this benefit by increasing the absorption of iron in the body, making it an effective combination for preventing anaemia. Soaking munakka overnight makes it softer and easier to digest. When consumed with saffron, it aids digestion and relieves digestive issues like bloating, gas and indigestion. This combination also supports gut flora, promoting overall digestive health.”

Shweta further explains, “Munakka, when combined with saffron, helps balance Vata dosha, which governs physical movement and is associated with dryness. The moisturising properties of steeped saffron are known for its neuroprotective effects and ability to improve memory and cognitive function. When taken with munakka, which provides essential nutrients to the brain, it can boost mental clarity, focus and overall brain health. This combination is particularly beneficial for students and individuals who perform demanding mental tasks.”

“This combination also helps in relieving menstrual pain. Both these ingredients have properties that reduce discomfort and cramps during menstruation, providing relief to women who suffer from period pain. It also regulates the menstrual cycle, improves menstrual flow and contributes to overall menstrual health,” says Shweta.

Another benefit of taking this combination is that it aids in uterine health, as its natural properties support uterine health and promote overall reproductive health.

Incorporating saffron-infused munakka into your daily routine is a simple yet powerful way to harness its Ayurvedic healing powers. Whether drunk on its own or added to herbal teas, milk or desserts, this divine elixir offers numerous health benefits that nourish the body, mind and soul.
