What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

Naturopathic doctors, a category of naturopathic practitioners, practice alternative medicine that focuses on diet, stress reduction, herbal remedies, and natural remedies. Naturopathic doctors may prescribe or specialize in massage therapy, acupuncture, or more traditional medicine. Their training and education requirements may vary by state, but these programs are not accredited by the U.S. Department of Education, and these practitioners are often unable to obtain licensure, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Check out this A-to-Z guide to proven home remedies.

Naturopathic doctors can obtain a license.

According to the association, there are no licensing requirements to call yourself a naturopathic doctor, but to earn the title naturopathic doctor (ND), a therapist must complete doctoral training through an institution accredited by the Council for Naturopathic Medical Education. It is necessary to receive Accredited Naturopathic Medical College (AANMC). Licensed naturopathic physicians must also pass a two-part naturopathic physician licensing exam.

Naturopathic Doctors Have Their Own Approach

“Naturopathy doctors are trained as primary care providers who diagnose, treat, and manage patients with acute and chronic illnesses, addressing illness and dysfunction at the levels of body, mind, and spirit.”Naturopathy said João Yanez, a physician and secretary general of the association. He is AANMC and Chair of the Academic Collaboration for Integrative Medicine. “Naturopathic medicine focuses specifically on treating the whole person, not just managing symptoms, but getting to the root of the problem to achieve whole-body health,” she says. Beware of these 12 reliable home remedies that will only make your symptoms worse.

Certain states have stricter regulations than others

According to the AANMC, states and territories that require NDs to obtain licenses and comply with regulations include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Includes Montana and New Hampshire. , New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Naturopathic doctors can specialize.

NDs primarily provide outpatient care and “may specialize in areas such as oncology, pediatrics, geriatrics, endocrinology, environmental medicine, and gastroenterology,” Yanez said. The scope of practice can vary by state and locality, she added. Depending on the condition, some NDs can perform minor surgeries (such as stitches or mole removal). Learn about the 14 medicinal herbs she can grow.

Expect your first visit with ND to take 60-90 minutes

According to the AANMC, naturopathic doctors will want to spend time with you over an extended period of time because they will consider your entire lifestyle. You can expect your ND to ask about your sleep patterns and diet. Check the appearance of your eyes, skin, hair, and nails. Then ask what medications you are currently taking. This will help your naturopathic doctor create a personalized plan that includes dietary changes, exercise, stress reduction techniques, herbal and vitamin supplements, and more, depending on your health goals.

ND operates on six fundamental principles.

“At the heart of naturopathic medicine is a belief in six guiding principles,” Yanez says. It’s about trusting the healing power of nature. Go beyond the symptoms to identify and treat the cause of the disease. Do no harm by finding the least invasive treatment. Educate about healthy behaviors. Treat the whole person. Focus on overall health and prevention. Read about these 17 natural cold and flu remedies.

Most people visit an ND because of gastrointestinal disorders or nutritional concerns.

According to a 2015 AANMC survey, most patients who seek treatment for ND are battling digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome or nutritional concerns. “Increasingly, patients are seeking healthcare providers who are knowledgeable about a more organic and natural lifestyle, from cooking to medicine,” explains Yanez.

First stop should be MD or DO

“If someone has a health question or problem, they should see a doctor,” said Leonard, a family physician and associate dean and member of the Medical College of Georgia Northwest Clinical Campus in Rome. Dr. D. Reeves says. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors. “Naturopathic doctors do not have the same type of training and do not have the same education that covers the scope and quality of medical conditions, diseases, and care that MDs and DOs (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine) receive. ” he says. Check out his 9 facts about alternative medicine that doctors want you to know.

ND treatments are usually not FDA approved

Dr. Reeves says it’s important to remember that while naturopathic doctors may receive their own education and licensure, it’s very different from the training and licensure they receive in standard medical school. He explains that most naturopathic treatments have also not undergone rigorous scientific testing.

ND may not know your entire health history

Ideally, your primary care physician will work with your ND to help ensure you receive the best possible care. “Your primary care physician is there for you through every step and stage of your life,” points out Dr. Reeves. “Don’t tell your doctor that you’re seeing a naturopathic doctor. Be honest with your doctor. They’re there to help you,” he says. Take a look at the 17 most common lies people tell their doctors.

You must keep track of the herbs and supplements your ND prescribes.

Some natural remedies and treatments, such as herbs and supplements, can interfere with the effects of prescription drugs. They can even make your condition worse, warns Dr. Reeves. She added that most family doctors are aware of the alternative medicine aspect of treatment, and that your doctor, doctor and pharmacist should know everything you’re taking. Check out 7 natural remedies that doctors actually recommend.
