What is Girl Moss and how this new wellness trend can benefit your health

The fast-paced world we live in can take a toll on our mental and physical health. Hustle culture, with its emphasis on constant productivity and achievement, can be especially exhausting for women, who often juggle multiple roles. That’s where a new wellness trend comes in: girl moshing.

What is Girlmoshing?

Girl Moss is about disconnecting from the pressures of modern life and reconnecting with nature. This involves:

  • Spend time outdoors
  • Lying on the forest floor
  • Bathed in sunlight filtering through the trees
  • Feeling the soft moss under your feet

The term itself originated from a 2022 tweet by journalist and influencer Daisy Alioto, in which she declared, “Girlboss is dead, long live Girlmoss (lying on the forest floor and being reabsorbed by nature).”

The idea resonated with many people, especially women, who feel overwhelmed by the relentless pursuit of success. Girl Moshing is a protest against the “girl boss” mentality and a celebration of rest and relaxation.

The importance of rest

There is a growing awareness of the restorative power of nature, and Girl mossing is capitalizing on this by encouraging people to spend time outdoors and experience the tranquility of the natural world.

Girl Moss is more than just lying in the woods: it’s a philosophy that values ​​rest and rejuvenation, which aligns with other movements such as Quiet No Smoking.

Rest is more than just a good night’s sleep. It’s a multifaceted habit that nourishes our mind, body, and soul. According to research from the Sleep Research Association, here’s why making rest a priority is the ultimate power move:

  • Sharpen your mind: When you’re well-rested, your brain functions at its best — you’re more focused, you solve problems more creatively, and you make better decisions. Lack of sleep, on the other hand, can make you think less well, feel irritable, and have trouble concentrating.
  • Strengthen the body: Rest allows your body to repair itself: while you sleep, your muscles rebuild, your tissues heal, and your immune system strengthens, which translates to increased energy levels, better resistance to disease, and improved athletic performance.
  • Stress Management: Chronic stress has a negative impact on your health. Relaxing activities like meditating, spending time in nature, or simply taking a calming bath can help lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This can lead to better emotional control, improved mood, and a reduced risk of stress-related diseases like anxiety and high blood pressure.

  • Prioritize rest over perfection: Rest is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Schedule rest into your day just like you would any other important task. Whether that means an afternoon nap or an early night in bed, listen to your body’s cues for rest. Remember, prioritizing rest is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength and self-awareness.
  • Make rest your friend, not your enemy: Think of rest as an investment in your overall health. When you’re well-rested, you’ll be better equipped to handle life’s challenges, achieve your goals, and live a more fulfilling life. So ditch the guilt and embrace rest as the ultimate power move. After all, a well-rested you is unstoppable!

All of these trends have emerged after COVID-19 lockdowns forced us to slow down. Perhaps we’ve learned the value of taking a break and allowing ourselves to figuratively “gather moss and rot”. Girl mossing urges us to embrace this natural rhythm and find peace in both growth and decay.
