He told me something his grandfather used to say on the subject: irrigation is so expensive that farmers can only survive on dry land with a good harvest once every ten years. I realized then, and I still do, that the significance of spiritual practice is relevant here.
If you’re like me, you know that some mornings, maybe many mornings, your time with the Lord can feel dry – so dry you wonder if the rain will ever come again. prayer And study and memorize God’s Word It’s worth it.
So what do you do? On the one hand, you could simply decide that it’s not actually worth it, and you could cash it in. You could close the book, put it next to you on the table, and instead look for something else that’s a bit more emotionally satisfying in that moment. Or you could keep plowing away.
You can keep working hard, day after day, even year after year. You can keep sweating and struggling, but above all, you can keep believing. You can choose the path of faith. In time, your feelings will catch up with what you know to be true. You can keep breaking down the hard ground of your heart and sowing the seeds of the Word into the cracked, dry places.
For you know that in due time rain will come, even in this dry land, and when it does come you will be ready.
