Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is also associated with reproductive complications in women, affecting 4% to 20% of women of reproductive age and is also exacerbated by vitamin D deficiency, but in men; Vitamin deficiencies can also play an important role in fertility problems. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with poor sperm quality and infertility. India has a growing fertility problem, more acute than ever before, but conceiving a child is nothing but a dream for women.

Research suggests that adequate levels of vitamin D are essential to maintain optimal sperm production and function. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Reene Dubey, consultant nutritionist at Maternal Hospital, Electronic City, Bangalore, said: One of the most important factors affecting an individual’s fertility is vitamin deficiency. ”

She revealed the list of vitamins and how they affect fertility.

Vitamin D:

  • Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a variety of reproductive health problems, including infertility.
  • Research suggests that adequate levels of vitamin D are essential for the production of reproductive hormones in both men and women.
  • Low levels of vitamin D are associated with reduced sperm motility and lower testosterone levels in men, and can disrupt menstrual cycles and impair ovarian function in women.

Vitamin B12:

  • Vitamin B12 plays an important role in DNA synthesis and cellular metabolism, which is essential for reproductive health.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency is thought to be associated with ovulatory problems and irregular menstrual cycles in women.
  • In men, low levels of vitamin B12 can reduce sperm count and motility, leading to male infertility.

Folic acid (vitamin B9):

  • Folic acid is essential for cell division and DNA synthesis, and is critical for reproductive health and fetal development.
  • For women, insufficient levels of folic acid can cause neural tube defects in newborns and increase the risk of miscarriage.
  • In addition, folate deficiency is associated with decreased sperm count and increased sperm abnormalities in men, impacting fertility.

Vitamin C:

  • Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects sperm cells from oxidative damage.
  • Decreased vitamin C levels are associated with decreased sperm quality, including decreased sperm motility and increased DNA damage.
  • In women, vitamin C deficiency can lead to impaired ovarian function and reduced fertility.

•Vitamin D: Low vitamin D levels are associated with infertility in both men and women. In men, vitamin D deficiency can lead to decreased sperm motility and concentration. For women, it can disrupt the menstrual cycle, disrupt hormonal balance, and affect ovulation.

•Vitamin C: Vitamin C is an antioxidant that plays a role in sperm health. Vitamin C deficiency can cause sperm damage due to increased oxidative stress, reducing sperm count and motility.

•Vitamin E: Similar to vitamin C, vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps protect sperm from oxidative damage. Vitamin E deficiency can lead to poor sperm quality and fertility problems in men.

•Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with infertility in both men and women. For men, it can affect sperm production and quality. For women, it can disrupt ovulation and menstrual cycles, leading to infertility.

•Folic acid (vitamin B9): Folic acid is essential for fetal development and may also play a role in fertility. Folic acid deficiency is associated with ovulatory infertility in women and can increase the risk of miscarriage.

•Vitamin A: Vitamin A is essential for reproductive health in men and women. Deficiency of vitamin A can interfere with the production of sex hormones, impair sperm and egg development, and lead to fertility problems.

•Vitamin B6: Vitamin B6 is involved in hormone regulation and can affect fertility. A deficiency of vitamin B6 can disrupt a woman’s hormonal balance, leading to irregular menstrual cycles and difficulty conceiving.

It is important to note that while vitamin deficiencies can contribute to fertility problems, they are often just one of many factors. Other factors such as age, overall health, lifestyle factors (such as diet and exercise), and underlying medical conditions can also affect fertility.
