North Korea warns of new measures against South Korea
Story: The sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has warned of new responses if South Korea continues to use loudspeakers and drop leaflets on the border between the two countries. In a statement carried Sunday by Pyongyang’s state news agency, Kim Yo Jong said South Korea “will definitely witness a new counterattack from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.” North Korea’s official name is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The South Korean military on Sunday released footage of a loudspeaker aimed at North Korea being turned on again and soldiers being trained to use it. This was a follow-up to North Korea ignoring a warning the previous day that it would send more garbage-laden balloons toward South Korea. Kim Jong Un said of South Korea’s new broadcast, “This is a sign of a very dangerous situation.” On Monday, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said they had detected signs that North Korea was setting up its own loudspeakers. The Joint Chiefs added that South Korea has no plans to activate loudspeakers that day. The area appears to be covered by the green wall seen in this video. North Korea has set up loudspeakers on its border with North Korea. South Korea has not broadcast over the loudspeaker since 2018 under an agreement signed by the leaders of the two Koreas. The broadcasts typically include world news, information on democracy and a mix of K-pop, and the audio is thought to reach North Korea a little over 12 miles. With tensions rising on the Korean peninsula, Seoul officials said South Korea and the United States held talks in the South Korean capital on Monday to better coordinate the allies’ nuclear response in case of war breaking out with North Korea. Meanwhile, Russian media have reported plans for President Vladimir Putin to visit North Korea within weeks. The Kremlin has been strengthening ties with Pyongyang, and other countries hostile to the United States, since the start of the Ukraine war.
