Students, faculty and alumni of the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Department of Kinesiology and Dietetics received special recognition at the Mississippi Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ annual conference held at USM’s Hattiesburg campus.
The theme of this year’s conference, held April 4-5, was “Food for Thought – Innovations, Solutions and Strategies for Success.”
USM award winners include:
- Nutrition Educator of the Year: Teresa Walker Cartwright, USM Faculty and Alumni
- Outstanding Nutrition Student – Nutrition Education Program: Kymberly Jackson, USM Undergraduate Student
- Outstanding Nutrition Student – Dietitian Internship: Eric Wicht, USM Graduate Student
- Emerging Dietitian Leader: Molly Edwards, USM Faculty and Alumni
- Famous young nutritionist: Chelsea Crocker, USM graduate
The USM School of Kinesiology and Nutrition offers bachelor’s degree programs in nutrition and dietetics and graduate degree programs in nutrition and food systems.
“We were thrilled to be able to recognize our current and former students and colleagues with such a well-deserved award,” said Dr. Holly Huey, associate professor of nutrition and dietetics and director of the undergraduate program. ” he said. “It’s really encouraging to see their hard work and dedication recognized and we’re excited to celebrate their accomplishments.”
Walker Cartwright, a lecturer in the Department of Exercise and Nutrition, said it was an “absolute honor” to be named this year’s Outstanding Nutrition Educator.
“I appreciate the recognition from my colleagues and students as it recognizes the time and energy I put into being the best educator I can be,” she said. “The students and the nutrition professionals I work with are my motivation and they make me always strive to be better and achieve better results. , gives me creativity and inspires me every day.”
Ms Edwards, a visiting lecturer and director of the Dietitian Internship Program, expressed surprise and gratitude when she learned she had been nominated for the award.
“I am so honored to receive this award, especially to be nominated by a former student. My internship students mean the world to me,” Edwards said. “Each year, approximately 10 interns participate in his two-year program. They complete graduate courses over the course of the program to earn their Registered Dietitian (RDN) credential, and they also work in the community. I work hard during my supervised practice time.
She continued, “I love getting to know our interns every year, watching them grow in their skills and confidence, and being able to guide them through the process. It’s an honor to see them serving the community.”
Members of the Mississippi Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics are dedicated professionals who volunteer their time and talents to improve the nutritional status of their clients and the public. MS-AND members are trained to provide nutrition information in a variety of settings and practice in every region of the state.
MS-AND is a state affiliated association. school The Society of Nutrition and Dietetics has 70,000 members nationally and internationally. Members are active in over 20 countries overseas. The membership consists of registered dietitians, registered dietitians, and students of nutrition and food service.
