United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties aims to build strong, healthy communities by hosting a free Health and Wellness Summit this summer.
UWLS, in partnership with the affinity organization Women United, will host the event at Father’s House Church, 2301 South Street, Leesburg, on June 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is a priority of UWLS’s Together for Health and Wellness program, which provides free physical, dental, and mental health services to insured and uninsured individuals. By providing integrated strategies and approaches, we aim to remove barriers to payment and health. access.
The summit will provide local residents with free access to the health and wellness resources they need. This family-friendly event offers many health screenings, services, speakers, and information, including wellness exams, blood sugar testing, dementia testing, lactation specialists, liver testing, nutritionists, yoga-guided fitness, and more.
The event’s two featured speakers are Jennie Joseph, owner of Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery, and Cendie Stanford, CEO and founder of ACEs Matter (Adverse Childhood Experiences Matter).
Joseph will discuss maternal health issues, including racial and ethnic disparities in maternal health outcomes nationally and locally.
For every 1,000 birth hospitalizations in Lake County, 24.2 Black women experience severe maternal illness or complications that can lead to negative outcomes for women and their infants. This is significantly higher than the 16.7 per 1,000 rate for all women in the county. UWLS is committed to addressing this issue, starting with events like this summit.
The Stanford University study focuses on how childhood trauma affects the brain and how to heal it.
According to research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 125 million (60%) American adults have experienced at least one traumatic event (ACE) in childhood, and an additional 52 million (25%) They were found to be more likely to have experienced three or more traumatic events (ACEs). It’s an underestimate.
