Yogyakarta: The reason for the Free School Meal Programme to be changed to Free Nutritious Meals has attracted public attention. The name change was also announced by the elected President Prabowo Subianto.
According to him, the flagship program called Free Lunch has another more appropriate term, namely “Free Nutritious Meals for Children.” Prabowo also said the reason for changing the name of Free Lunch to “Free Nutritious Meals” was for flexibility in the implementation of the program.
“I would like to make a slight correction. I looked into it and found that the correct words are ‘providing free nutritious meals to children’. That’s it,” Prabowo told YouTube channel tvOneNews on Thursday, May 25.
The reason for renaming the free lunch program, put forward by Sujatmico, the council of experts of the Budiman national campaign team, is twofold.
The first reason, as Prabowo stated, is flexibility based on feeding times.
“Yes, now eating something nutritious for free does not mean that the original plan of the free lunch was less nutritious. It’s just that the time of eating is not restricted. So there are two possibilities: you can replace breakfast with breakfast,” explained Budiman Sudjatmiko of atkitp detikcom.
Budiman said the second reason has to do with budgetary savings. The name of the program is believed to affect the government’s implementation of the program. He acknowledged that the party is currently calculating the implementation of the program.
“When Pak Prabowo was still campaigning, he put the (free food budget) at about 400 trillion rupiah per year, which is roughly right, but that’s assuming they can get food from anywhere. But if you do the math, it could be cut in half,” he reiterated.
Budiman said that in addition to the name change, there has also been a change in the business philosophy, especially from food sources that were initially planned to be imported to implementing the process of domestic production, and also considering the village as the source of production and food supply.
“Eighty percent of the needs of the nutrition programme can be met in the villages of the state,” he said.
The plan is designed to not only reduce production costs but also regular distribution, boosting the village economy.
In addition, by 2029, when the programme is fully implemented, there are plans to open 650,000 hectares of new farmland and build 50,000 new livestock sheds.
“When the population reaches 82 million in 2029, we project that high productivity can be achieved through the establishment of 650,000 hectares of new rice fields for nutritious feeding programmes and 50,000 new cages to increase meat supplies,” he explained.
