New research shows that teachers who say they are passionate about their work and practice self-care are more likely to be effective teachers.

Many teachers participate in professional development training to improve their instruction, pedagogy, and curriculum, but recent research shows that personal attitudes and behaviors can also influence student success. It has been revealed.

Article published in magazine BMC Psychologyassess how work passion and emotional regulation among educators influence students and improve their own professional health and educational effectiveness.

background: Higher education faculty often lack training in teaching and instead rely on their own teaching experience and teaching methods, which can put them at a disadvantage when faced with challenges. .

Over the past decade, student mental health has declined, with young people reporting historically high levels of anxiety and depression. Students may look to faculty for support, but this can also make it difficult for faculty to manage their own health.

Previous research has emphasized the need for training and education on how faculty can support students’ mental health, but how professors’ mental health affects their teaching effectiveness and role satisfaction. We haven’t really focused on how it will affect us.

the study: Researchers surveyed 401 Chinese teachers who teach English as a foreign language in higher education. Each participant completed a questionnaire assessing professional well-being, teacher effectiveness, passion for work, and emotional regulation based on separate measures of each variable.

Researchers define passion for work as “a disposition toward actions or efforts that an individual values, finds enjoyable, and that expend a significant amount of time and effort.”

Passion can improve a person’s happiness and motivation, give them a sense of meaning in life, and in the case of instructors, increase their effectiveness.

Because instructors’ health status is also an important component of teacher effectiveness, researchers also sought to examine how professors’ emotion regulation affects teacher effectiveness.

According to this study, emotional regulation is the ability of professors to control and manage their own emotional experiences and emotional expressions, which influences students’ responses and responses during class and increases overall faculty resilience. may be promoted.

Through statistical analysis, researchers found that work passion and emotional regulation predicted occupational well-being and educational outcomes, particularly self-determination, autonomy, enthusiasm, resilience, and persistence.

so what? Based on their findings, the researchers discovered two major themes.

  • Faculty health is critical to student success. Emotional regulation helps teachers with their overall well-being as they face challenges and interact within the classroom. Therefore, investing in teachers’ psychological health can help increase job satisfaction and improve relationships with students. Professors with high intrinsic motivation and optimism are also more likely to be satisfied with their roles, develop their teaching skills, and invest in their own professional development.
  • Effective teachers are happier. Professors who rated their effectiveness and teaching abilities highly were less likely to exhibit the fear, frustration, and sadness associated with disengagement and burnout. Therefore, building teachers’ confidence in their own teaching abilities can not only promote health and well-being, but also foster higher levels of engagement within the institution.

With this in mind, researchers encourage administrators to invest in training to promote effective teaching, with a focus on professional enthusiasm and personal well-being.

Training should:

  • please consider that Each teacher will have a different strategy Although emotional regulation is based on personality, it still differentiates between positive and negative tactics that people can use.
  • promote vulnerability Strengthen collaboration between departments to best assess situations and address faculty concerns in specific situations.
  • Highlight practical tacticsshows when and how to implement different practices in the classroom.
