The first thing you notice about Tequila Sunrise is its coloring. The red base blends into the orange color and, as the name suggests, it reminds you of a sunrise. Tequila Sunrise with Maraschino Cherry and Orange Slice is a charming and quirky cocktail. The drink originates from the Biltmore Arizona Resort in Phoenix, where bartender Gene Slitt invented the drink in the 1930s. The original version of the slit included tequila, lime juice, soda water, and crème de cassis. It was in his 1970s that Tequila Sunrise was adapted to feature orange juice and grenadine at a bar called The Trident in Sausalito, California. With its bright, refreshing taste, it’s no wonder Tequila Sunrise originated in sunny Arizona and California.

At one time, Tequila Sunrise was the Rolling Stones’ go-to drink, which contributed to the cocktail’s rise in popularity. And they weren’t the only rock stars to love this drink. In 1973, the Eagles released a popular song called “Tequila Sunrise.” With the help of rock icons and their fans, Tequila Sunrise became a phenomenon.

Tequila Sunrise isn’t as popular these days as it once was, but it’s still a delicious warm-weather cocktail. Plus, it’s easy to assemble and requires only three ingredients: tequila, orange juice, and grenadine. Choose Silver Tequila for this cocktail. This is a young variety with a clear color and a sweet, earthy agave aroma. Fresh, tart, freshly squeezed orange juice is recommended, but boxed OJ is also a good choice. Grenadine, a pomegranate syrup, provides not only a beautiful deep red color but also a fruity sweetness. Garnishes of orange slices and maraschino cherries are nice additions, but not required.

Are you ready to channel your inner 70’s rock star and drink some sunrise tequila? Keep reading for an easy recipe you can make at home.
