We all want to eat healthy food, but it doesn’t always come served on a plate. Especially when dining outdoors, the chances of being served food that is considered healthy are slim. This is not to say that restaurants serve bad food, but very few of them put a special emphasis on healthy eating. Pathayam, located on Government Press Road near the Thiruvananthapuram Secretariat in Kerala, is a big exception. Pathayam, a whole foods restaurant, emphasises the idea that “good food is the cure for all ailments, not medicine.”
This restaurant is a naturopathic food startup that prioritizes health over taste. Therefore, it is not for those looking for rich and indulgent cuisine. Patayam serves red boiled rice, mildly spiced main courses, banana smoothies, and salads. Hence, this restaurant serves vegetarian dishes with organic vegetables and grains. This restaurant also emphasizes the importance of including green vegetables and millet in your diet for health.
The Pattayam restaurant also believes that cooking certain foods is harmful to human health because it destroys the natural enzymes in the food, reducing its nutrients and the “life force” that they believe is present in all raw and living foods. Before humans discovered fire, our ancestors ate raw foods and were blessed with good health. The restaurant serves organic dishes, along with raw nuts, legumes and sprouted grains.
The restaurant’s menu is nothing to brag about and is more of an appeal to fitness enthusiasts than foodies. You’ll find some South Indian cuisine with an organic twist. Loh Payasam, Bamboo Rice Payasam, Wheat Samosa, Fruit Kit are some of the signature dishes on the menu.
One of the main things that sets Patayam apart from other restaurants is that they don’t use red chillies in their dishes. Instead, they use pepper and green chillies to spice up the flavour. If you are someone who prefers healthy eating over elaborate cuisine, then Patayam is a must-visit place the next time you’re in Thiruvananthapuram.
