The University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Extension Food and Nutrition Education Program will offer a free, multi-session nutrition education program in July for expectant mothers, parents, guardians and youth in Aroostook County.
The program will be offered three times: The first multi-session series kicks off June 26 from 10-11 a.m. and will be held weekly throughout the summer at the Caribou Parks and Rec Maintenance Shop, 903 Main St. in Caribou. The second will be held at the St. John Valley Technology Center, 431 US Route 1 in Frenchville, from 10-11 a.m. July 1, 3, 8 and 10. The third will be held at the Saint Francis Community Center, 857 Main St. in St. Francis, from 10-11 a.m. July 23, 24, 30 and 31.
Sessions will cover a variety of topics, including how to get kids involved in the kitchen, meal planning, shopping smart, food safety and cooking techniques that minimize costs while maximizing nutrition. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on cooking activities where they will learn how to prepare delicious, nutritious recipes using affordable ingredients. The program will also provide participants who complete all four classes with free cookware, a $10 Hannaford gift card and food samples. The class series is kid-friendly, so parents and guardians are encouraged to bring their children.
The class is a collaborative project between the University of Maine Extension and Cooking Matters, with the shared goal of promoting healthy eating habits and improving culinary preparation skills.
Registration is required and is limited to eight adults. To register or request appropriate accommodations, please contact Laurie Colton at laurie.colton@maine.edu or 207-249-4688.
