Mental wellness may not be a groundbreaking concept, but in recent years, there has been a paradigm shift in how we perceive it, especially with regards to career paths and work environments.

This growing awareness stems from compelling evidence showing that mental health is directly linked to productivity, job satisfaction and overall well-being.

As society gains a greater understanding of the impact of mental health, more people are prioritizing their mental health when planning their careers.

This isn’t a one-way street: employers, too, are recognising the value of a mentally healthy workforce, not just for productivity but also to drive engagement and innovation.

Let’s take a closer look at how mental health affects career choices.

Understanding Mental Health

Mental health and mental wellness are often used interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same thing, even though they can roughly speak about similar aspects of mental health.

While mental health typically refers to the presence or absence of a mental disorder or psychological state, mental health embraces a broader perspective and focuses on the overall quality of one’s mental state, including emotional balance, resilience, and the ability to grow and achieve personal fulfilment.

So, mental health is very important to maintaining your mental health. If this sounds complicated, let me explain further. Generally, mental health includes:

• Emotional well-being, which involves managing emotions in a healthy way, having a positive outlook on life and being resilient in the face of difficulties.

• Psychological well-being, which includes self-acceptance, a sense of purpose and personal growth.

• Social well-being. This involves having meaningful and positive relationships and contributing to society.

Why is mental health important?

To answer this question, let’s go back to mental health. In 2019, the WHO reported that around 970 million people worldwide are living with a mental illness, most of which are depression and anxiety. It is estimated that around 15% of working adults in the workforce live with a mental illness, which is a significant number considering that around 60-70% of adults are employed.

This high prevalence rate highlights the need to prioritize mental health. Mental health is essential as it directly impacts an individual’s ability to function effectively in their personal and professional environments. Good mental health increases productivity, creativity, and job satisfaction, while reducing absenteeism and turnover.

The importance of mental health

From the above explanation of mental wellness, it may already be clear why it is important for an individual to make a career choice. The state of mental health significantly impacts an individual’s ability to choose a career path that not only matches their strengths and interests but also promotes their long-term professional and personal happiness. Let’s break down the main reasons why mental wellness is important:

• Mental health provides clarity and self-understanding – Good mental health allows individuals to better recognize their strengths, weaknesses, and true desires. Prioritizing mental health gives individuals a clearer view of their personal and professional goals, allowing them to make more informed and authentic career choices. This self-awareness gives them a deeper understanding of what drives and fulfills them, enabling them to pursue a path that aligns with their core values and passions, ultimately increasing their overall life satisfaction.

• Mental health helps you manage stress – Stress and burnout in the workplace are not uncommon and are often the result of poor mental health. Prioritizing your mental health will help you stay emotionally balanced and remain calm under pressure. Your ability to manage stress will not only improve your overall health, but it will also lead to better decision-making and productivity in both personal and professional spheres.

• Mental health leads to job satisfaction – Mental health has a significant impact on job satisfaction, which in turn influences career decisions. People with good mental health are more likely to feel satisfied and fulfilled in their role, while those with mental health problems may consider changing jobs to improve their happiness. Job satisfaction can also significantly improve employees’ mental health.

Understanding how mental health influences career choices highlights the importance of prioritizing mental health in all aspects of professional life.

Being aware of the impact mental health can have on career decisions can help people make choices that align with their values, passions and overall well-being, which can lead to more fulfilling and sustainable careers.

As awareness grows, both individuals and organisations have a key role to play in ensuring that mental health is recognised as a foundation of working life.
