Events such as cooking demonstrations, tastings, and giveaways
From staff report
Lowcountry Technical College’s Southern Culinary Institute will hold an open house and live recipe contest at the institute April 6 from 10 a.m. to noon.
While the open house is aimed at prospective students considering entering culinary school this summer and fall, activities such as live events and cooking demonstrations are open to the public.
“This is our way of not only showcasing our facilities and our students, but also the industry,” said Chef Francine Maltz, dean of the Southern Culinary Institute. “We want the community to see all that our program has to offer.”
Launched earlier this year, the Taste Like Home Recipe Contest (sponsored by King Arthur Baking Company and Culinary School) was open to area high school students and current culinary school students. Eight finalists were selected to advance and compete in a live event.
The finalists range in age from 16 to 60, and the recipes submitted include both sweet and savory dishes such as meat pies, dumplings, cakes and cookies. Contestants said they drew inspiration from holiday gatherings, family traditions, cultural heritage and more.
Contest judges include bakers from King Arthur, America’s most trusted baking resource, as well as bakers from area businesses and eateries. The winner, announced at the end of the contest, will receive a trip to King Arthur in Vermont or a scholarship to the Southern Culinary Institute.
In addition to the competition, Culinary Arts School faculty will provide cooking demonstrations and tastings, and King Arthur representatives will give presentations about the company.
Students have access to TCL’s more than 60 programs, as well as culinary school registration and financial aid information and tours of our facilities.
Those interested in attending the event are encouraged to RSVP to www.tcl.edu/culinaryrsvp.
Culinary Institute of the South is located at 1 Venture Drive at Buckwalter Place in Bluffton.
