Tammy Joseph has been teaching Pilates for over three years and currently runs her own studio, Pilates by Tammie.
Pilates by Tammy opened July 1 behind the club house on Route 1. Joseph teaches private sessions and group classes for up to six students. Participants spend the entire 55-minute class on the reformer, working every part of their body with exercises like stretches, planks and lunges.
“It’s a really safe way to work your whole body and I think people are starting to realise how great it is,” Joseph says.
Joseph teaches some of the 26 traditional Pilates exercises, as well as contemporary Pilates, her own twist on the century-old exercise. She teaches in a boutique studio, a small space that focuses on just one or two exercises. In a small studio, Joseph says it’s easier to move around the room and make sure each student is using the correct form.
Joseph offers classes with different levels of difficulty and techniques: Reformer Flow, Power, Align and Sculpt. He hosts morning classes starting at 7:30am and afternoon and evening classes starting at 4:30pm. Between the two sessions, Joseph teaches private classes and finds time for his own training on one of the six Reformers. In the future, he plans to introduce Cadillac and Tower equipment to vary the way his students exercise.
Joseph, a Cape graduate, first discovered Pilates seven years ago when her best friend got certified in Washington, D.C. She convinced Joseph to try it, but he thought the workouts were boring and for older people.
Joseph has been riding and training with horses for 15 years and was recently a CrossFit aficionado until he injured his knee. His knee surgeon recommended Pilates and Joseph reluctantly gave it a try. He began training at a local studio and doing Pilates three to four days a week. Soon after, Joseph became certified in Balanced Body reformer, chair, trapeze and mat during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“After rehab and a couple of knee surgeries, I’m now doing nothing but Pilates,” Joseph said. “I feel stronger than I’ve ever been.”
Joseph taught six days a week at Right Balance Pilates on the Rehoboth Boardwalk, and this summer Joseph’s wish to reach a larger audience and teach more frequently was fulfilled when one of his clients decided to move out of their office and offered their building to Joseph.
Now that he has his own studio, Joseph enjoys nothing more than seeing his clients improve their balance, strength and confidence. He also recommends Pilates to young athletes as it is a great complement to sports or other regular fitness programs.
“It’s truly a full-body experience,” Joseph says. “I love it.”
