With a little data mining, you can learn more with reliable research. Christians are growing spiritually Despite other metrics declining, according to the latest market research conducted by the American Bible Society. We shed light on the optimism amidst the recession by analyzing key indicators from our annual State of the Bible 2024 report.

SOTB (State of the Bible) data focuses on overall trends, including:

  • How many millions read the Bible?
  • How many people go to church?
  • How many people are donating?

In addition to broader categories, this study also draws out personal meanings of whether the Bible is changing people’s lives and whether they are encountering God in the Bible.

Key Indicators of Trends in Spiritual Growth

How to use the Bible

Positive signals reveal that 21% of Gen Z adults claim their use of the Bible has increased. This is more than double the number of Gen Z adults reporting a 9% decline.

Although self-report surveys may exaggerate optimism, they still suggest positive perceptions of the Bible. Millennials were the only age group with a 12% decrease and 11% increase.

Considering the decline reported in the American Bible Society study, the graph above is very encouraging. “Data on the current state of the Bible confirms recent declines in Bible use, Bible engagement, and church attendance. However, our findings regarding people’s desire to read the Bible , further suggesting that all is not lost: the majority of Americans still have a desire for the Bible.”

Relationship with the Bible

Noteworthy demographics of Bible interest by generation

  • Black Americans are once again at the forefront of Bible engagement, just as they were last year.
  • Evangelicals are most likely to be devoted to the Bible.
  • The South is the region with the greatest commitment to scripture.
  • Baby boomers won as the generation most likely to be engaged in the Bible.
  • Nearly two-thirds (65%) of Millennials are uninterested in the Bible.
  • Gen Z adults ages 18-27 are the least likely to be interested in the Bible (11%), even though they report reading the Bible more frequently.

spiritual vitality

This finding reveals positive momentum among Christians who are experiencing spiritual growth while looking for signs of hope.

The percentage of Christians who are “thriving” has increased from 19% in 2023 to 21% this year. This finding suggests that over 3 million American Christians have become stronger spiritually despite their circumstances from the previous year.

However, the number of people classified as “sick” Christians increased from 21% in 2023 to 28% in 2024. We recognize that the majority of individuals who claim to be Christians experience a decline in spiritual vitality.

importance of the bible

Regarding the social impact, State of the Bible reports, “One in seven Americans consistently say the country would be better off, but four in nine say America would be better off without the Bible.” They say it’s going to get worse.”

Every year, the answer is the same, but this year one question made a crucial difference. This study shows that half of Americans believe that reading the Bible is an important part of a child’s character development. This is an increase of 50% from 46% last year.

In 2023, school issues have been in the news, sparking debate among parents, teachers, and school boards about child education practices. This latest trend suggests a growing focus among parents on Biblical moral standards.

The good news is that this study reveals a slight increase in the number of people who say the Bible’s message has changed their lives compared to last year. In 2023 he increased from 57% to 58%. Of particular significance is that Gen Z adults increased by 4% to 54%.

State of the Bible provides deep insight into what motivates Christians to read the Bible. “Rich and Healthy” Christians say their motivation for reading the Bible comes from drawing closer to God. “Sick” Christians, on the other hand, claim that their motivation stems from a sense of duty.

The report states: “This gives some direction to those who are trying to teach the Bible and get people deeply involved in it. Remember their level. For spiritually ‘sick’ Christians in crisis , a message of comfort can be more persuasive than guidance when it comes to discerning God’s will for your life. That’s what these numbers suggest. ”

The conclusion is

The Current State of the Bible is an important resource that helps you better understand the Christian perspective in terms of spiritual growth and the role of the Bible. Whatever we focus on expands. Therefore, we must prioritize the positive insights gleaned from this report to guide the advancement of spiritual growth in Christian communities.
